I am researching the SMOCK family of SE Illinois Territory 1800-1810. I am aware that the area at this time was Randolph Co., IN Terr and became Randolph Co., IL Terr in 1809. However, recently I was informed that Randolph Co., IN Terr was out of Knox Co., NW Terr. My "The Handbook for Genealogist" doesn't make this transition very clear. The time line for Territories is- NW Terr formed ? IN Terr formed 1800 IL Terr formed 1809 IL State formed 1818 ______ Counties to the west north west of the juncture of the Ohio and Wabash Rivers-- Knox Co 1790 formed out of NW Terr (original area of Knox unknown) Randolph Co 1795 formed out of NW Terr Gallatin Co. 1812 formed out of Randolph Co Johnson Co. 1812 formed out of Randolph Co Pope Co. 1816 formed out of Gallatin and Johnson Cos Hardin Co. 1839 formed out of Pope Co. My C. SMOCK and family came to the area (Cave in Rock on the Ohio River) between 1800 and 1808. This was the time just before the transition from IN Terr. to IL Terr and just after the transition from NW Terr. Apparently they came to IN Terr, but which county-Knox or Randolph? The question is where would they record their right to land? Best regards, Hugh
