Shields b. 1806 and died in 1879. He married Mary Anne Carr and was the son of Charles Shields and Anne McDonnell Shields. He settled in Kaskaskia, Illinois in 1826? and taught school and studied law. I can't find any information on his parents or his children. I would like more information concerning his parents Charles Shields's parents and his children. I know also that he was born in Ireland. He held many positions in government such as Governor of Oregon besides being elected for office as a U.S. Senator. If anybody has more information on him,please let me know. Are you sure this was in Randolph County? Many Shields live in Jackson County yet today. In the 1870 census, I found William Shields, MD living with many other people in Sparta, IL. I also found Emily & Thomas Shields living with the Clany family in Sparta, IL. Thomas was only 5 yrs. old. No Shield/Shields is listed in the 1880 census.
