    1. [ILRANDOL] Death Record for John Gottlieb Lessing
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: shamale Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.illinois.counties.randolph/741/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am trying to locate a death record for my great-great grandfather, John Gottlieb Lessing. Alternate spellings may be Johann Gottlieb Lessing. Alternate spellings of the last name may be Lesing (appears as this in 1860 census but is probably in error), Laessing, or Laessig. He was married to Ernestine Wilhelmein Haertle Lessing (or Hertel or Hartel--the a is probably an "umlaut" a, or a with two dots over it and the most accurate spelling is probably Hartel with the a an umlaut a). He lived in Red Bud, IL around 1854? to his death in 1862 and was employed as a wagon teamster. I can bracket the date of death as somewhere between June 1862 and September 1862 and most likely it was sometime in July of 1862. He died in a wagon accident I am told. The spelling of his name appears on Missouri death certificates for some of his children, so I am fairly certain that is should be Lessing, but have seen alternate spellings in other documents. Would appreciate any assistance i! n locating any information or document regarding his death or burial. Most likely his family was a member of either St. John's Lutheran Church or Trinity Lutheran Church of Redbud. I believe that Trinity is the most likely since there is some uncorroborated evidence one of his children was confirmed at Trinity. Please contact me at shamale@hotmail.com with any information or the email for this board. Thank you Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Randolph County, IL death records start at 1877. RCGS has a very small list of a few deaths before that date. I looked at an index to TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH, HORSE PRAIRIE, ILLINOIS and a HARTEL is listed. I do not have the actual records, only the index. This listing is: HARTEL b. - 83a There is no listing for LESSING. Since this is just South of Red Bud, perhaps your Hartel came from Horse Prairie. 3. You can call (Anna State Hospital) Choate Mental Health and ask for medical records(Human Information Services) at: 618-833-5161. They will be able to tell you what you can or cannot do. You can check at the Union County Court House for a death record. It may give you some information, at least cause of death. Best of luck to all in your search for thses types of records. One can only try........Kay James ----- Original Message ----- From: <GDETTLEFF@aol.com> To: <ilrandol@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 13, 2007 10:53 PM Subject: Re: [ILRANDOL] Chester Asylum > > In a message dated 6/13/2007 9:49:12 P.M. It depends on your approach as to why you want the records. If you say you want them for genealogy, you probably won't get them. If you can get a form to get the records released and then get a doctor to sign this form you may be able to secure the records. Then again records that are over 100 years old may be released without a doctor's signature. I am not sure about those. You would need to contact the facility and ask for their procedures. One example I know of in the St. Louis area deals with a family history of depression and children being adopted by an aunt and uncle. The biological mother was institutionalized by the biological father but the children didn't know what was wrong with her. The older children seemed to know more but didn't tell the younger ones until later after the mother died. She had been in and out of the hospital several times. Now the youngest daughter has children with medical problems and she does too. She is getting her doctor to sign a form to get her mother's medical records released. I don't know the status of the request. These records date to the 1940s-1950s. Gloria ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    1. Re: [ILRANDOL] Chester Asylum
    2. My two cents worth about getting medical records on patients, deceased or otherwise: Yes, it is true that HIPPA laws have made it very difficult to obtain information about patients now however, it is not impossible. If you can show a medical reason, usually through a doctor's statement, you can get old records from institutions. For example, if your family has a history of a certain condition and you have a relative who was institutionalized 60 years ago but you don't know for what, you may be able to obtain that information with the proper form from your doctor. Medical records for an individual who is still living are available to that person through the Release of Information Act. That person must sign for the information but the hospital or doctor cannot withhold it from him/her. Gloria ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    3. Velda, I was just checking my mail and saw this posting. I am a RN at a state mental health hospital. I can tell you that it will be impossible to obtain records from any mental health hospital now. Since Hippa was instituted it has closed a lot of avenues in the health care field. The system we had worked fine, but goverment had to overdo it cause more paperwork and money to be spent. The Mental Health Code is even more ridgid then Hippa about patient medical records. We can not even tell anyone who calls to check on family they are even there without a release of information from the patient. One can check the census records for the time the patient may have been there. You can also check the court house for commitment papers and check the death records if the person died there. I have located persons in old state aslyums by being lucky enough to find them in the census for the town/county the aslyum located. Many now go under a state mental health hospital/ state psychatric hospital. Randolph co. is Chester Mental Health and operates on the same guide lines the hospital does where I work. I hope this helps in these kinds of searches. It us my personal feeling that family members should be allowed access to committement diagnosis as well as any family members listed. However my opinion does not count for much. lol.......... I have been following this list for awhile now and I subscribed to search for family information related to Randolph co. The Rhodes of Randolph Co. census of 1860. Oriethel Rhodes and Thomas Rhodes both listed as physcians. The whole family listed and their place of birth, year of birth all match up with the 1850 census in Wisconsin. They were of the Stonebridge Indian tribe of Mass. which part of them went to Wisconsin to the reservation there. That is where I found them in the 1850 census. I believe these people to be my ancesters due to the matching census information. Their ancesteral grandmother was an Indian Docteress as well as her brother, Thomas and Rhoda Fuller. Rhoda married Joeseph Rhodes in Mass or New York. Anyway, Oriethel Rhodes remains in the Census records as a physcian and right now I can't remember the town. It is not to far from Chester. Some of the children went to St. Louis, MO to work in the early 1900's. I am wondering if there is any information about Oriethel Rhodes in you Society? I have a File I can send you if you are interested. I would be interested in hearing form others with like family interest. 3. Does anyone know of any books or other information for the Chester Asylum for the Criminal Insane? I have found pictures and history for it but not much else. I am trying to find out more information on my husband's great uncle, Leroy Landauer, who died there on 21 Sep 1901. He was born and is buried in Canton, Fulton Co., IL and he never married or had any children that I know of. I know a lot about his parents and siblings and have found him in several federal censuses, including the 1900 where he is an inmate there. His uncle also ended up in a mental hospital and I am wondering just why that is. Thank you for any help you can give me. Judy Landauer geniegal@g14.myrf.net
