    1. [ILRANDOL] Civil War Pensions
    2. If you ever thought about ordering a CW Pension or any document from the National Archives better do it now. As of Oct 01, 2007 the prices will go up. A pension now is $37.00, on Oct 01 it will be $75.00. Here is news release from Family Tree Magazine. We’ve known it was coming since the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) proposed last February to raise its reproduction fees for records you order. The good news is, it could’ve been worse. Effective Oct. 1, NARA will charge $75 for a Civil War pension file of up to 100 pages, plus $.65 per additional page (for longer files, staff will contact the requestor with a price quote before filling the order). NARA will charge $50 for pre-Civil War pension files regardless of page count, and $.75 per page to copy other records. While still a steep increase from the current $37 for a Civil War pension file, these fees are less than the $125 and $60 NARA originally proposed for Civil War and pre-Civil War pensions, respectively. (Still, save some cash by sending your request before October. The July 2007 Family Tree Magazine has instructions for ordering Civil War pensions.)

    2. Velda Moore
    3. In case you do not get the Rootsweb newsletter, I am going to give you a way to read tombstones which are unreadable with the naked eye. Shine a light on the stone with a mirror. I didn't keep the URL which shows pictures of how the stone looks both ways, but it is remarkable. You will be able to read the tombstone without damaging the stone. In this same article, it states that the chemicals and oils in shaving creams will enter the porous stones and damage them. 1. [ILRANDOL] Query - Eliza J. MOORE, b. 1841
    2. The 1850 Federal Census for Randolph County lists eight year-old Eliza J. MOORE iand her eleven year-old brother Frances E. MOORE (my great grandfather) n the household of their stepfather Samuel BOYD. The census seems to say Eliza was born in "SI," but where is that? According to family lore, Francis's parents, William Moore and Margaret Dunn immigrated from Ireland in 1840/41, arrived at Chester, IL in Feb 1841, and "settled southeast of Evansville on what has been known as the Archibald Hogue farm." If so, Eliza J. MOORE must have been born in Randolph County. I have found no further record of Eliza J. MOORE. She is not in Samuel BOYD's houshold after 1850. Does anybody know what may have become of her?

    3. Hi Velda, Thanks for the swift reply as I know how busy you must be. Sorry I was a little shy on facts. I believe that Wm. McBride came to Randolph Co. in the early 1899 with Archibald Thompson around 1808 ( I think). I may be a little tangled here, but what I have is that Archibald Thompson married Mary McBride who was Williams daughter. Looks like that would mean that Wm was some older than Archibald. If you come across it, I would also be interested in knowing what religion they were.
