In tracing my SMOCKs back from IL to KY the linkage is in the USC 1850 Hardin Co., IL in which Hiram, b. 1800, son of C. and Sarah SMOCK, shows his place of birth as KY, his younger brothers, Barney (1808) and Alfred (1810), show as IL. This strongly suggests that the family moved from KY to IL some time after 1800 and before 1808. A search was made for C. SMOCK in the USC 1800 KY. There were no C. SMOCKs but there was a Cornelius SMOCK in Bullitt Co., KY with family. This Cornelius (b. 1772 PA) was the son of Barney (Barent) and Antje (Cozine) SMOCK of Mercer Co., KY. Several Mercer Co., KY records cite Cornelius as an adult before 1800. A check was made of the USC 1810 KY for Cornelius and he was not found. It was found that a number of Cornelius' siblings went north to IN. While there were Cornelius SMOCKs in IN, none was old enough to be Cornelius, b. 1772. As it currently stands, the evidence seems to support C. SMOCK of IL = Cornelius SMOCK of KY. If so, this line can be traced to the SMOCKs of NJ and the progenitor, Hendrick Matthyse SMOCK. Looking for more data on Cornelius SMOCK in either KY or IL. Best regards, Hugh

Madison's full name was Martin Madison SMOCK. Though born in 1836 AR he lived his adult life in IL (mostly Hardin Co., IL). Madison doesn't seem to have any parents. I have found three SMOCK entries in the USC 1830 AR, but none in USC 1840. The three SMOCKs were Barnet, Alfred, and Casper. Barnet is Barney SMOCK who returned to Hardin Co., IL by USC 1840 as did Alfred SMOCK. Casper is unaccounted for in or after 1840. Madison would be age 4 in 1840 and is not accounted for in Barney's or Alfred's families in USC 1840. Barney and Alfred had an older brother, Hiram (b. 1800), who remained in IL with their widowed mother, Sarah SMOCK. He is listed in her household in 1830 and she in his household in 1840. It is believed that it was the same location/house in Cave in Rock, IL. In USC 1840 Hardin Co., IL Hiram's household included Lydia 26, his wife; Sarah 68, his mother; a female 10-15, probably Matilda; 2 males <5 and 2 males 5-10. Madison, then 4, could be one of these males since only one, John 2, is subsequently (USC 1850) identified. Since Hiram married Lydia Hughs in 1737 and in 1840 they had 2 males 5-10 and 2 males <5, either Hiram or Lydia brought children into the marriage or some of these could be orphan children of other families which were housed by Hiram's family. If one of the males is Madison SMOCK 4, then he does not show as a male 14 in 1850 in Hiram's household or else where to my knowledge. Madison SMOCK m. 4 Aug 1856 Vina/Lavina HOLLOMAN in IL Madison served in CW with Co. C, 48th IL Infantry (1861-1865) Madison survived the death (1898) of Vina, his wife, and died in 1925 in IL The questions are: 1) the parentage of Madison SMOCK. Who were they? 2) where was he born? in AR?, in IL? 3) where was he in 1850 at age 14? Best regards, Hugh

I just received this and thought I'd pass it on. The old genealogy scam is back. www.genseekers.com Behind the password protection are links to the free genealogy on-line. There is no content of their own. In order to get the "5-day free trial" you have to surrender a credit card or bank account number. You have to cancel within 5 days or you get dinged. Guess what? The cancellation e-mail bounces. Does this surprise you? One person who recently fell for the come-on had his/her account dinged not once, but twice. It is time to remind folks on your state and county mailing lists about these scoundrels. It has been a couple of years since we have mentioned this. Permission is granted to pass this on. ==== MCKELVY Mailing List ==== Remember to search other spellings when you run into a brick wall. Velda, I don't see anything wrong with the note, but maybe we should add that they need to get their Vet. info. in as so as possible. I don't think anything you said should hurt any ones feelings. See you soon. Oh I just have 131 messages.so you know is going to happen to a lot of them. Love, Midge ----- Original Message ----- From: "Velda Moore" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, February 15, 2003 7:39 AM Subject: Randolph County Genealogical Society office Dear Researchers: RCGS will reopen on Feb. 18, 2003. There is no heat in our research room, therefore we must close for a portion of the year, but we come back renewed in our committment to helping you find your loved ones. The office is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each MONDAY & TUESDAY. Our library has grown considerably. You will be surprised if you have not been there in a while. Please come take a look! PLEASE GET YOUR VETERAN INFORMATION IN FOR THE NEW VETERANS BOOK. Don't leave your relative out! This is Veterans from Randolph County including ALL WARS. The form to fill out is on our website: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilrcgs/. Download it and just fill in the blanks. If you have a picture of the Veteran, it will be included. The deadline is near! One of our volunteers drives from Ava, IL and one drives from Rockwood, IL to work every Monday & Tuesday. Their years combined in this work is more than forty. Two of the volunteers are from Chester. This is real dedication especially when the volunteers receive no pay, no gas money, often no thanks, and must use their own money for supplies. They work in the research room when it is hot summertime and when it is so cold, they can see their breath. Much of the work they do is done at home. How did you think all those books got typed? How did all the research get done? The mail must be answered, the bookkeeping done, and the library must be kept in order so that you, our members, can find what you need. One volunteer drives from Perryville, MO to help get the quarterly done. One volunteer works at home in the Walsh area doing scrapbooks for our library. And thanks to the people who pay their $20.00 membership fee, we don't go in the hole! We do have to curtail copying part of the time so that our bill is not too high. There are other volunteers who work at home, too. Their efforts are duly noted, but I was only considering the OFFICE work. Who has knowledge of Alexander Stewart who married Mrs Mary ARNOLD in Perry Co., IL 20 Jan 1857 Vol 3 page 37? Who is researching this family? Thank you, Jeannet
My ggg grandfather Dr. Robert Eveleigh Taylor arrived in the US from Lancashire, England in October, 1819. He settled in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess Co., NY. His obituary was carried in the Poughkeepsie Republican Telegraph and Observer newspaper on 24 October 1827. It stated that his death occurred at Pym's Farm, Kaskaskia, Randolph Co., Ill. I have been unable to determine why he would have been in Illinois or what was the nature of Pym's Farm. If anyone can help me to understand anything about Pym's Farm, or if you have any information about Dr. Taylor I would be very appreciative. Since Robert Taylor was a physician, I have speculated that Pym's Farm might have been a treatment center for medical patients, but I do not know how to determine if this was true. Any help would be appreciated. Jesse Wallace Rochester, MN

I've "rescued" an old photograph of Mrs. GNAEGY taken at the Thomas Smith Studio in Chester, Illinois. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1870's with Mrs. GNAEGY looking to be in her 60's at the time. Another photograph obtained from the same source includes the following surnames, OETTING and WILSON. The handwriting on the back of the two photographs may be the same, however, it is hard to tell if the notations were written by the same person or not. I'm hoping to locate someone from this family so that the photograph can be returned to their care. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
