    1. [ILRANDOL] Dealing with Gustav Anjou sources or any other sources.
    2. Wil Franklin
    3. I always recommend following the path of suggested sources to see if you can find true documentation through government sources, church records, newspapers.etc. Any of the accepted forms of documentations are easily validated by following the path of any researcher. Only then should one accept the information as being accurate and valid to include in your family history. Institutions such as LDS and Ancestry gets alot of their information based on submitters that may or may not have documented proof of their lineage. I use anyone's information as a map to chart my next move for researching rather than willingly accept it as fact and will not include it without validating information myself. I like having the copy of documents found in trusted, acceptable forms of proof in my hands. Wil

    1. [ILRANDOL] Dealing with Gustav Anjou sources
    2. Thought this to be of interest to us researchers; From: Baldwin <[email protected]> Subject: Dealing with Gustav Anjou sources and subsequent corrections Questions regarding Gustav ANJOU. As a relative newbie (I have been doing offline research for many years now) to online research, I am revising my notes to adhering to strict source documentation and citation, I am now starting at my birth entry and working backwards in my tree to ensure proper documentation and source citation has been used. For the first year as an online researcher, I simply gathered names and paid little bother to the notes and sources other than cut and past method. Now that I am at the point of being able to share substantial documented info on several lines I want to make sure my work is ethical and documented at a professional standard. I don't want to add any more horror stories to those out there already. Yesterday gathering info to send a distant cousin, to my horror, I have hit a major amount of research on at least one line that includes several hundred if not more individuals based on research I have gathered from a family tree online obtained at Ancestry.com that used Gustav Anjou work as the main source. (see below) Sources: Abbr.: Wilson History Author: Anjou, Gustave [USE WITH CAUTION!!!] Several years into intense research I now am familiar with just how fraudulent or a criminal Anjou was. The person who posted this info and used it in her tree is having her work copied and passed around in many forms some without this warning... To avoid anymore disasters and wastes of time, should I just unlink the individual where the bogus information might start, and move it to possible notes for future use. Or as disheartening as it may be, should I completely fo rget about info obtained from this citation altogether. I run a large amount of reports and do not want to include bogus or suspect information. Since there is a growing number of newbie researchers for this family grouping and I am seeing the bad info being passed around often without the warning message, should I take on the role of a "Nosy Nelly" and post in message threads the problems associated with Anjou's work, or should I just include it on my own pages when dealing with the source info and contact information for the various researchers out there. Should I use a statement that includes the documented fraudulent and criminal nature of  Anjou as a warning. Reason being. There is another researcher in a separate line that wrote a well used book on our family lines that contains many many errors, but this was due to his careless errors or genuine mistakes. That I have always seen as "use with caution" but to issue a simple "use with caution" message when finding Anjou's work seems to bee too much of an understatement. Any advice would be appreciated ... thank you. Stephen

    1. [ILRANDOL] Knox Co., Indiana Territory 1790
    2. I am researching the SMOCK family of SE Illinois Territory 1800-1810. I am aware that the area at this time was Randolph Co., IN Terr and became Randolph Co., IL Terr in 1809. However, recently I was informed that Randolph Co., IN Terr was out of Knox Co., NW Terr. My "The Handbook for Genealogist" doesn't make this transition very clear. The time line for Territories is- NW Terr formed ? IN Terr formed 1800 IL Terr formed 1809 IL State formed 1818 ______ Counties to the west north west of the juncture of the Ohio and Wabash Rivers-- Knox Co 1790 formed out of NW Terr (original area of Knox unknown) Randolph Co 1795 formed out of NW Terr Gallatin Co. 1812 formed out of Randolph Co Johnson Co. 1812 formed out of Randolph Co Pope Co. 1816 formed out of Gallatin and Johnson Cos Hardin Co. 1839 formed out of Pope Co. My C. SMOCK and family came to the area (Cave in Rock on the Ohio River) between 1800 and 1808. This was the time just before the transition from IN Terr. to IL Terr and just after the transition from NW Terr. Apparently they came to IN Terr, but which county-Knox or Randolph? The question is where would they record their right to land? Best regards, Hugh

Mary (born 12 May 1846, died 21 June 1896) was a daughter of George HARMON and Mary CAUDLE. George was from early Randolph County settler (about 1810) Michael HARMON and Katherine ZIGLER......whose progeny gave the New Palestine-Diamond Cross area the name "Harmon settlement." 3. Dear Denise, According to: A Genealogy, History and Chronology of the Kreisler-Crisler Family of the United States of America by Crisler, William Neville Jr; 1981, Waco, TX; Texian Press, repository Chester, IL Public Library: Parents of Leonard Crisler who married Eleanor Taggart are Elder Silas Crisler and Mary Ann Shaver. They were married 28 Sep 1808 in Burlington, Boone, KY. They had 9 children., of which Leonard is #5. "One of the most useful and respected of the early residents of the county, the Rev. Silas Crisler, arrived from Boone county, KY in 1818, and began the improvement of a farm, on the old Shawneetown road, near the Harmon settlement seven miles north of Chester. Much of his time was devoted to the work of the ministry, and he was the founder and pastor of the Gravel creek church, one of the early Baptist churches in Illinois. He died in 1851" (Combined History of Randolph, Monroe and Perry Counties Illinois wilth illustrations; McDonaugh & Co, Philadelphia PA 1883 , repository, Seattle Public Library) Leonard and Mary had 3 children: John Leonard b. 1841; Silas Fletcher, 1842-1880; John Washington 1842-1863 (died Mission Ridge, TN) Silas Fletcher married Mary Harmon cir 1866-1867 (I do not have a source for this, it is from births of children) Their 3rd child, John W Crisler, married Caddie Wilson and that is the line I am working on. 1. [ILRANDOL] Madison SMOCK, USC 1880 Hardin Co., IL
    2. Madison SMOCK (aka Martin Madison SMOCK) is listed in the USC 1880 Hardin Co., IL age 48, b. AR with both parents born in IL. Madison or Matt, as he was called, was raised in IL, served in the CW in an IL Regiment, married in IL, and died in IL. His birth in AR appears to be a result of his parents leaving IL going to AR before 1836 (Madison's birth) and then returning Madison to Hardin Co., IL. Three SMOCKs of IL went to AR between 1830 and 1840 are Barnet (Barney), Casper, and Alfred. Casper does not appear again, Alfred returned by 1832 when he married Sarah WILKINSON, Barney was married before he left for AR and he returned with children by 1840. Neither Alfred or Barney show an unidentified male child age 4 in their households in 1840. This suggests that Casper apparently was the father of Madison. It would appear that Casper did return to IL with Madison, but died before the 1840 census or returned after 1840 and died before 1850. This scenario is unproved, but does provide an approach to finding the facts. Best regards, Hugh

    1. [ILRANDOL] OETTING - WILSON Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Lizzie WILSON OETTING, Elzio OETTING, and Lena WILSON taken at the Jostman Studio in Chester, Illinois. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1890's or early 1900's and pictures two young girls probably 11-14 years of age and a woman in her 30's. The older girl is definitely related to the woman, probably her daughter, but I'm not certain about the other girl. Whoever wrote the names crossed through the surname WILSON for Lizzie, so I'm thinking that maybe WILSON was her maiden name??? The mystery is are the OETTING's referenced the mother and daughter and the other WILSON girl a younger sister or niece? I need help solving the mystery and seeing that the photograph can be returned to the family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
