    1. [ILRANDOL] Family Research Tips
    2. Velda Moore
    3. A few tips for you researchers: 1. Of course you already know about birth certificates. They usually begin in 1877 2. Some counties have birth registers. This gives about the same information as a certificate. 3. Ask about DELAYED Birth Certificates. These are often overlooked, but older people whose births were never registered with the county came to the courthouse to get his/her birth registered in order to get pensions, social security, or get jobs where birth certificates were required (this can no longer be a requirement). ESTATES 1. To find date of death, details of wills, names & relationship of heirs, guardians appointed for children whose parents were deceased, widow's amount of husband's estate, final settlement of estate, and results of contested estates. If a person was in an institution, probates often have records of the monies to take care of them. PAUPERS 1. To find names, ages, place of residence, occupations, birth places of paupers; death or place of burial may also be recorded. DOCTORS 1. A county record book is kept to give the names and qualifications for those people who were doctors, midwives, dentists, nurses, Optometrists, veterinarians, architects, and teacher's records. This record gives the names of schools attended to earn the certificate and the years of service within the county. 2. Gieselle Staub
    3. I recently found out that my Grandmother was said to have ran away with a boy when she was young. My great-grandfather was said to have gone and gotten her and brought her back and had it annulled. Does anyone have an idea where to start looking for that annulment? I would assume it happened between 1925-1929 and they lived in Baldwin at the time. Thanks for your help. gieselle

    1. [ILRANDOL] Thomas SMOCK (1821-1902)
    2. All SMOCK researchers, Recently a very valuable piece of information from JoLene <[email protected]> came my way regarding Martin Madison SMOCK (aka Madison or Matt) of Southeastern Illinois. In the Hardin Co., IL death certificate of Martin Madison SMOCK it was learned that his father was Barney SMOCK. This fact has finally connected Madison to his rightful place in the genealogy of the SMOCK family. Also it gave the married name of one of his daughters, Mary Catherine (Smock) SHETLER. There remain other SMOCKs whose connection is probable, but not defined. Case in point is Thomas SMOCK (1821-1902) whose parents are unknown. The fact that there was only one SMOCK family in the region of Southeastern Illinois at the time of Thomas' birth strongly suggests that he is of this SMOCK family, but the specific SMOCK parent is not revealed. Because the death certificate of Martin Madison SMOCK has been there for the asking and it has just now been located, causes me to question whether there were death certificates issued as early as 1902 in Hardin Co., IL. and, specifically, is there one for Thomas SMOCK. Is anyone in a convenient location to check this possibility out? Best regards, Hugh

    1. [ILRANDOL] Re: INS/Naturalization
    2. A & D Schendel
    3. Dear list members, Last night I read something on the PAWESTMO list that was really exciting so I sent to message to all of the mailing lists I am on before I went to the site. After going to the, now, BCIS site I am forced to write this message. The address for the INS, now Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS), web site is http://www.immigration.gov/graphics/index.htm I went to the site after I had mailed my "discovery". There is a very large *caveat. This site provides immigration information under the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA). Upon going to that part of the BCIS site I printed out the 4 page application. Two of those pages were instructions. At the top left of the first page of instructions it is written: Are There Cases When You Do Not Use This Form? Do not use this form: (1) To determine status of pending applications, write to the office where the appellation was filed or call the nearest INS office; (2) For Consular notification of visa petition approval, use Form I-824 (Application for Action on an Approved Application or Petition); (3) For the return of original documents, use Form G-884 (Request for Return of Original Documents); *(4) For records of naturalization prior to September 27, 1906, write to the clerk of the court where naturalization occurred; or *(5) For information on INS arrivals prior to December 1982, Write to the National Archives. You have to be in a very special category to be able to get naturalization records from the INS! Dorothy J. Schendel [email protected]

    1. [ILRANDOL] INS/Naturalization
    2. A & D Schendel
    3. Copied from another mailing list. Dorothy J. Schendel [email protected] I got my copy of his naturalization from the INS. Visit their website to find the address of the appropriate office. With the INS, you have to send your FOIA request to *your* nearest INS office, not the office nearest the incident. (I originally wrote to an office in PA, only to have them send it back and tell me to mail it to a local office.) When you write to the INS, be sure to give as much information as possible, but most importantly the time you believe him to have recieved his naturalization, and where he lived at the time. And be patient...since 9/11, the INS seems to be moving much more slowly on FOIA requests. I had originally written for my grandfather's papers in April 2001. In Oct 2001 I received "most" of the papers, but due to a clerical error (which they claim wasn't their fault) I received someone else's Declaration of Intention. I had to start all over again because my request was closed. So, in November 2001 (post 9/11, and during the anthrax mailings) I wrote again with even greater detail. On March 31, 2003--over a year later--I got my papers. This didn't cost me a thing, just time. Good luck.

    1. [ILRANDOL] New Veteran's Book
    2. Velda Wittenbrink Moore
    3. The publisher was at RCGS on Tuesday to meet with the staff. He told us that we did not have enough prepaid orders for the book (a preorder is cheaper: $40.00 + $5.00 more if it has to be shipped or mailed). The book when it is finished and been to the publisher will cost $47.50 + $5.00 S/H. People who sponsor a book and get one in this cost have not come up to expectations. I think this amount is $135.00. If the staff has done all the work on the book, don't you think someone out there could afford to buy a book early? If you can, it would be a great help to know we won't go in the hole. Please tell all your relatives about the book and the names of the family members who will be represented in the book. Thank you to all our veterans and to those of you who have already bought your book and/or sponsored a book. RCGS Staff
