    1. [ILPOPE-L] Obtaining history of Mt. Zion, Rock, Il
    2. Faye Bowman
    3. I am gathering history of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Rock, Pope County. My main two reasons for working on this history: (1) My husband, Earl ( Pete) Bowman’s father, Alvis Bowman and his father, Joshua “Mack” Bowman’s family were supporters of the cemetery and many were members of the church. (2) Our son, David was buried there in 1995. Since all the early church records were burned in the Pope County Historical Society Museum’s tragic fire in 1987 the only way for us to reconstruct part of the membership rolls is through the older generations’ memory. We’ve got to hurry cause none of us are getting younger! Spread the word among family and friends! Success depends on your help! Some suggested information to be compiled: (You can add more, I’m sure!!) (1) Names of pastors with estimated dates. Obituaries or biographies of deceased pastors. (2) Pictures: ( Identify as many people as possible and give dates) (estimate if necessary) a. Church building when the bell was in the belfry, etc. b. Pastors, Sunday School officers and teachers. c. Gatherings: Homecomings, baptisms, community events, etc. d. Transportation (3) Baptisms: a. Who? b. Where? c. Dates. (Approximate) (4) Obituaries or biographies of deceased members. (5) Memories of living members: a. Remember who was attending when you were there. People you know were members. b. Describe Christmas at church; Memorial Day observations, etc. c. Who taught your Sunday School class? d. Who was the Song leader, pastor, etc. (6) How was the Lord’s Supper observed? (7) Tell about going to WEBQ to broadcast the Baptist Hour in early 1950’s. (8) What traditions can you recall? a. Seating ? b. Amen Corner? c. Clothing (aprons, etc.) d. Frequency of meetings I appreciate your help! Please send information to: Faye Bowman R#2 Box 154 Golconda, IL 62938 E-mail: abowman@accessus.net
