    2. Carolyn Cromeenes Foss & I compiled four volumes of Pope Co marriages from 1813 [just one marriage before 1817] through 1909. We checked the original marriage license, affidavits, minister’s return, consents & applications. From the beginning of the county through 1877 all that was required were the names of the couple, who preformed the ceremony and the date of the marriage. Starting in 1878 more information was required before you could obtain a marriage license; names & ages of couple, residence, place of birth, names of parents, race or color, number of times married, occupation of groom, location & date of marriage, witnesses and who performed the marriage. We included all the information we could find on each marriage. I hope this helps you. 3. Judy: I would have been lost long time ago if it had not been for your four volumes of marriage records!! Highly recommend them to anyone doing research in Pope County. Do you have any available to sell? If you do, how would we contact you to order them? ---carol UdyDee43@aol.com wrote: > > > >Carolyn Cromeenes Foss & I compiled four volumes of Pope Co marriages from >1813 [just one marriage before 1817] through 1909. 3. Dear List, Yes, I, too, have praised the Pope County Marriage books to the high heavens!!!! I have a question perhaps someone could address. I have Murphy ancestors who were in Pope County from at least 1820, and probably before that. If marriages were not listed , say between 1813-1825, where would be some likely places? Obviously, Johnson County, but was there a place or places that folks tended to go for marriages? 3. May I ask a favor of you? I didn't know your marriage book existed. Is there any record of a marriage in Pope county of anyone named Dees or Deas by any spelling before about 1825? Also is there any record of a Polly Whittaker marrying anyone during that time frame? In the late 1900s Polly married a Jonathan Joiner and used the name Polly Whittaker, but before she married Jonathan there were two records of her where she was listed as Polly Whittaker aka Dees and as Polly Dees, and she appears to have been the daughter of Mark Whittaker. Judy Armstrong Thanks a lot. ----- Original Message ----- From: <UdyDee43@aol.com> To: <ILPOPE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 11, 2005 4:47 PM Subject: [ILPOPE-L] Pope Co IL Marriages Carolyn Cromeenes Foss & I compiled four volumes of Pope Co marriages from 1813 [just one marriage before 1817] through 1909.
