Hi! I just have a brief question. Were marriage bonds ever customary in Pope County? If so, were records kept of the bonds, who the bondsmen were, and where they came from? This is part of my search for the county of birth of John Carr. Born in South Carolina, lived in and raised his family in Jackson County, AL until the early 1850s when he moved the family to Stonefort. His son, my 3rd gr grandfather George Washington Carr married Mary Ellen Warren in Pope County in 1856. Any help would be appreciated! Robert Schneider Berkeley MO 63134
Robert, this is perhaps "off the wall," but I've been wondering for years if there was a connection between your Carrs and my Halls, who lived in Mountain Township, Saline County, less than a mile north of the Pope County line and about five miles east of Stonerfort.. My gg grandfather, William Hall named his eldest son (born about 1852) Hezekian Carr Hall, and he was called "Carr" all his life. I don't know for certain who William's parents were. My grandmother thought William's father, who she said lived two or three miles southwest of Equality, was named Hezekiah, but the only Hall family I can find near Equality that fits was this: 1850 Federal Census - Hall, Sarah 42 F 100 TN - Hall, William T. 24 M Laborer 300 TN - Hall, John F. 19 M Laborer IL - Hall, Martha J. 14 F IL - Hall, Charles D. 12 M IL - Hall, James M. 10 M IL - Hall, Francis M. 5 M IL - Hall, Zachariah A. 2 M IL STATE: IL COUNTY: Saline DIVISION: Curran Precinct REEL #: M432-127 PAGE #: 56A HH #: 21/21 Enumerated 30 Sept,1850 I've found trees on the Internet that say that Sarah's husband, my ggg grandfather, who died before 1850, was named Zacariah, not Hezekiah. But maybe my grandmother was mistaken and confused the names Zacariah and Hezekiah since her great uncle was Hezekiah Carr Hall and her great grandfather Hall, husband of Sarah, died long before she was born. The only other information I have about William Hall is that he and his wife (Mary Musgrave Hall) are buried in the Jones Cemetery in Saline County and were probably members of the little church (I think it was Methodist) up the hill from the cemetery. William and Margaret were married in Hamilton County in 1851, and the censuses of 1860 and 1870 indicate that William was born in TN. The William's daughter, Morning Orlena Hall, married George Riley Wagoner of Pope County in 1885. And George was the grandson of John Waggoner of Williamson County. My point is, my family's marriage history seems to indicate that the families in this area in the 1800s must have traveled around in several counties and had connections with other communities, maybe through churches and revivals or maybe through commerce. In any event, there must have been a reason why William named his eldest son Carr, so I think he had some connection with somebody who was a Carr, but whether the Carrs were friends or relatives I don't know. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert Schneider" <robert_s_63134@yahoo.com> To: <ILPOPE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 04, 2005 6:39 AM Subject: [ILPOPE-L] Marriage bonds in Pope County > > Hi! > > I just have a brief question. Years ago, when I began searching family records, I recall that one of the clerk's at the Pope County Office (courthouse) told me that when Pope County began to charge or raised fees for licenses, that many couples filed out of state (KY, TN, MO, etc). with no fees. I am not sure about 'marriage bonds' but someone on this List could answer that in more depth than I can. I do know that between 1889-1906 birth certificates were not mandatory, and in fact, that up to year 1906 parents were even 'paid' for registering births. My mother and her 8 siblings *never* had a birth certificate registered in Pope County, and they all had great difficulty applying for social security benefits when they retired. They had to vouch for each other. Death certificates in 1908 were not mandatory, either. It would be interesting to know when these records became mandatory for Pope County. This is just one reason why keeping and preserving old church records are so important. I have yet to find out where the church records for the Waltersburg ME Church are, and why the Pope County Historical Society has not received at least a copy of them, as well as the Waltersburg school records. -- carol _____________________________________________________________ -> * seeking families in GERMANY (Ostfriesland) and RUSSIA (and Prussia) * WALTER, SITZLER, CORELL, HUELSMEIER, RYDER, RAUCH, RODEWALD, BACH, SAUERESSIG, EISENHAUER. -> * also POPE COUNTY, IL ,TN, MO, USA* HOLLOWAY, HALL, MAXWELL, MITCHELL, DeHART, (Sistler) SITCHLER, PATE, DABNEY, MEADOR, BEEMER / BEAMER, RIDER / RYDER.
On the subject of mariage bonds, when I was at the Pope County courthouse two years ago, I asked if there were any marriage records other than the lists of names and dates and I was told there were not. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert Schneider" <robert_s_63134@yahoo.com> To: <ILPOPE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 04, 2005 6:39 AM Subject: [ILPOPE-L] Marriage bonds in Pope County > > Hi! > > I just have a brief question.
