I recently received this data from a cousin who is a granddaughter of Loren Logan Belford, concerning his ancestors: -------------------------------------------------------- George Smee was born in Brentwood, Essex County, England. There are no dates for either his birth or death. There are a couple of notes. One is "At the age of 14, young George set sail from England, as a stow-away, on a 2 month long voyage to the US." There is no information as to where the ship set sail from, what year it was or where it put into port in the US. Another note said "George was a short man, with long white chin whiskers that his great granddaughter, India, used to love to sit and comb. India says 'We lived with Bill Adams at the time of Grandpa's death. The children were all taken to the palette to sleep away from the corpse until the next day.'" George Smee married Julia Ann Cummins, who was born in Illinois. I don't have the date of birth or where in Illinois she was born, but I suspect that it was somewhere around Pope County, IL. It looks like there was a daughter named Molly Smee Black who eventually lived in Cave-in-Rock, IL, a son Frank Smee, and the oldest daughter was Mary Elizabeth Smee. Mary Elizabeth Smee was born on August 9, 1868 and died on March, 1929 and was buried in Parma, MO. Mary Elizabeth Smee married Willis Allen Adams (the Bill Adams with whom George Smee lived when he died). There is a note that the family lived in Illinois until 1904 when they moved to Parma, MO. Willis Adams and Mary Elizabeth Smee had 11 children, several of whom died in either infancy or childhood. Their oldest surviving daughter was Julia Catherine Adams, born December 19, 1886. Julia was my grandmother. Julia's daughter was India Agnes Belford, and India's daughter is Melba Bailey. Julia's oldest son was Willi! s Addison Belford, my father. One of the sons of Willis Allen Adams and Mary Elizabeth Smee was Andrew Jackson Adams, who was born on October 18, 1891 and died on September 16, 1905. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I found Willis Allen Adams, father of Julie Catherine, in Equality (Gallatin County, just north of Karber's Ridge) in 1880. He was listed only as Willis Adams, 19 years old, and he was working as a farm laborer on the farm of a man named Riley. Willis listed his birthplace as Illinois and showed his father and mother as born in Tennessee. So I backtracked to 1870 to see if I could find Willis in his parents' household. I didn't find a nine-year old named Willis, but I found a nine year-old William A Adams in Pope County. His father's name was illegible. It looked like Maes or maybe Waes, age 40, farm laborer. His mother was named Nancy, age 35, and both parents were born in TN. I went back to 1880 and tried to find this couple and couldn't. So I went to 1860 and started looking at all the Adams living in IL in 1860 who were born in TN. In Hardin County, I found what might be paydirt. In 1860, there was a 61 year-old man named Allen A Adams living in Hardin County. His! wife (I think, listed as housekeeper) was named Martha, age 55. In their household were TEN young adults and children, ranging in age from 36 to 8, all with the surname Adams. All of them were listed as SERVANTS. The names and ages of Waes/Willis and Martha don't match up, but I decided I should keep this family in my files as a possible root. Anyone who has any information about any of these families, please let me know. Judy Armstrong
