Hello Could anyone tell me if there are any mortality books available for the 1870's and 1880's for Pope County? I am trying to find a death record or date for Cynthia and Nathan Nelson. I believe that they passed away in Pope County. Thank you for any help available Brenda snoangel@bellsouth.net
On the 1870 & 1880 there are mortality schedules. In 1870 they are still listed in New Liberty: 17/17 NELSON, Nathan 47 Farmhand MS Sintha 43 Keeps House MS William 24 Farmhand MS Elizgean 20 no occ. MS James 18 at home MS Alfred 15 at home MS John 13 at home MS Levy 3 at home IL There is one Nelson listed on the mortality schedule with no first name age 2 I didn't find them either on the 1880 Census or the mortality schedule. But, of course, they would only be on the mortality schedule if they died within a year of the census. I did check the cemetery books I have and don't find them there either. Since not even the children are on the census, that would lead me to think they moved somewhere else. I don't have a statewide census or mortality schedule.
