    1. [ILPOPE-L] Re: SMOCKs in Arkansas 1830
    2. SMOCK researchers, In researching SMOCKs in 1860 in Hardin Co., IL, I came across the census entry for Madison SMOCK which revealed that Madison was born in AR. His age at the time would indicate his birth in 1836. An examination of the USC 1830 AR showed three SMOCK adult male entries--Barnet, Casper, and Alfred (all under the age of 30). None of these SMOCKs or any other SMOCK appear in USC 1840 AR. In 1830 Alfred was not married, Casper probably was, as was Barnet. It appears that Barnet is, in fact, Barent or Barney SMOCK later (1840) found in Hardin Co., IL. Census entries for Barney show that some of his children were born in AR. Alfred is a brother of Barney, who returned to IL where in 1832 he married Sarah WILKERSON and in 1840 appears in the Hardin Co., IL census. Casper is not further identified at this point and has not been found later. From this summary it would appear that the father of Madison was either Barney or Casper. Some time before 1856 Madison returned to Hardin Co.. IL where he married Lavina HOLLOWAY. So between 1836 and 1856 the whereabouts of Madison in unknown. In 1840 Madison would be 4 (<5), in 1850 he would be 14 (10<15), and in 1860 he as 24 (20<30). He enlisted in C, 48th IL Inf in 1861. He died and was buried in 1925 in Hardin Co., IL While the potential of linkage of Madison to the SMOCKs of AR is there, as is the linkage to IL, to date that linkage (parents) is missing. Any help out there? Best regards, Hugh
