One could assume that EVITTS was her married name, but then I checked all male EVITTS on my database, and have no one married to "Margaret" either. I checked the surname sometimes spelled EVETTS, to no avail. (The family today spells the last name EVITTS, but was often mis-spelled in early records.) I have also checked out John MERROW, and John MERRILL (since another MERRILL is listed in Pope County)- neither of these surname spellings appear in 1845, 1855, 1860, 1865 State and Federal Censuses nor other marriage records. Nothing was found in the Pope County Family History volumes. Also checked (but not throughly) Massac County Research book, and neither EVITTS or MERROW/MERRILL appear. It is very possible that he was from other surrounding counties, or states...and married Margaret there in Pope Co. I would check all EVITT spouses and see if you can find a widow Margaret who had a different maiden name. Perhaps you could do an EVITT "Groom" search at the Illinois Marriage Record online site.
