    1. Re: [ILPOPE-L] 1870 Census (Murphy Family)
    2. Hello Margaret, I am very interested in the Murphy families of Pope Co., Illinois. I am descended from Mathew Jenkins (born 1796 in TN) who married Sylpha Murphy (born in SC) -- I don't know the marriage date. They arrived in Pope Co., about 1817 and resided near Delwood. I know Sylpha had a sister named Pheobe who married Isaac Newton in 1828. In the Pope Co. marriage book, Mathew Jenkins was listed as her brother-in-law. That is all I know about the Murphys. Does this tie in with Alexander some how? Thanks a lot Suzanne Liva Villa Park, IL

    3. Hello Suzanne, How nice to hear from you. Yes, I believe your line does tie in with Alexander somehow, I just don't know yet. Supposedly, my Alexander Murphy the First (that's what I am calling him because he is the first one I know about) was born in SC in 1775. He was married to a Sarah or Sadie Jenkins. We think they show on the Pendleton County SC census of 1810, but of course, this may not be the right guy!!! The family arrived in Pope County sometime prior to the 1818 census, but I don't know where they were between 1810 and 1818. I noticed that for Phebe Murphy's marriage her mother was listed as Sarah Cowan formerly Murphy. We think that old Alexander died before 1830, so maybe this Sarah Murphy Cowan is Alexander's widow whose maiden name was Jenkins. Let's stay in touch, and maybe we can piece this together.
