Hello I believe I have found past relatives living in Union in Pope county Illinois. I found information on them in the 1880 census for Pope County. If anyone has this census then please contact me with information on the Owen family's. Is Union a town that was there then but long gone or is it still around or was it a Township? Where is or was it located? Thanks for any help!
In the 1880 Census, Enumerated by *James B. FLOYD, June 1880, UNION (Colorado) is listed as a "Precinct", as were the others. It rests on the Saline County and Johnson County lines. Next to Polk Precinct (Oak) and also borders Eddyville Precinct (Eddyville) and Alexander Precinct (Glendale). Towns listed in above parenthesis were post offices in 1880. *James B. FLOYD did both the Union and Polk Precincts, and appears to have confused them and interchanged them at times. *About 1 1/2 pages in Union Precinct (Probably Polk Precinct) are very dim and so faint as to be illegible. --- The only UNION I could find in "Ghost Towns of Southern Illinois" were as follows: UNIONVILLE in Massac County, first known as Union Village - intersection of Fort Massac-Padukah and the Padukah-Equality Roads. Last business closed in 1938 - after declining into a small country hamlet. UNION in Randolph County , a post office near Union School east of Camptown (east part of Chester). Opened 1844, closed 1851. UNION P.Ofc., aka PRESTON, in Union County - a MIssissippi River town short distance down stream from the Big Muddy River. Grew rapidly during Civil War, and a shipping point for livestock, grain and lumber. Post Office opened in 1843, closed in 1855, reopened in 1856 and closed 1885. The townsite is now in the river bed. Did not get into more details, but all above are now considered ghost towns. Found nothing in Pope County.
