Here are two Whiteside/Rose connections in my data. (I am related through my HOLLOWAY branch that married into WHITESIDE family several times.) A. Milo Simpson Grant WHITESIDE & Amilda Ann "Milda" ROSE, marr 1894 Eddyville, Pope Co, IL, Bk A-1, pg 202, #1819 by J.B.Whiteside, M.G.; witness: Eva Maynor & Genry (Henry?) Gilbert at Wiley Rose residence **Double wedding ceremony w/ sister, Cora ROSE. B. Elizabeth HOBBS ROSE, marr James Armstrong Whitesides b. 1782 VA or NC his 1st marr 1803: Margaret PENNEY - they had 6 children, Pope Co, IL 2nd wife 1816: Elizabeth HOBBS-ROSE, "a widow" - they had 6 children, Pope Co, IL **James, Margaret and Elizabeth are buried in a private cemetery on the home farm, 2 1/2 miles south of Eddyville, IL, near New Liberty Church. ---a little WHITESIDE history: James, with his family came to Pope County about 1810-1812, bringing several slaves that were indentured to him when Illinois became a free state. Some stayed with him until his death (1848) and later formed a black settlement West of Eddyville, IL. James, his brother John, Adam McGhee, Lincoln Harper, Robert PENNEY and others started a settlement a few miles south of Eddyville, near New Liberty Church. When Illinois became a state, James served in the house of Representatives through several sessions, and also in the Senate. He was appointed as Captain of the Fourth Regiment of Illinois Militia on May 27, 1812. The WHITESIDES came originally from Ireland in the early 1700s, and settled in the Virginia Counties of Rockbridge and Augusta. James A. (born 1760 VA) was the son of Moses WHITESIDE. This James also had a son, James Armstrong, born about 1782 - the above subject. (*note source for above: "History and Families, 1816-1986, Pope County, IL" by Pope County Historical Society.) Turner Publishers, Paducah, KY. 42001 Sorry, I dont have any info / data on BARNETT. It appears that Elizabeth's maiden name is HOBBS, that she married a ROSE, became widowed and married WHITESIDE. I am related thru Edmond Rose and Elizabeth? thru their daughter Mary "Polly" who married James Grissom. > >Now my confusion goes as to what Elizabeth's maiden was. I've seen some trees have her as HOBBS, & some info has her as BARNETT. I've also seen this on the LDS site. Is it the same Elizabeth or are they referring to two different women here!!! Confused??!!! I see from the LDS site that she married James A. Whiteside in 1816 but I've also seen her name as BARNETT and HOBBS/ROSE. Can anyone clarify this for me?? > >Thanks well in advance > >Donna > > > >
