    1. Pope County Trains?

    3. Since I was a teenager, (which must have been back when Ceasar and Cleopatra had Ceasar Jr.), I have been told that there was no rail service to Golconda, and never has been. To my shock, after reading Mildred McCormick's "Fifty Years Ago..." column in the Herald Enterprise, I see that there has been a few comments about a rail cargo and passenger service that was, indeed, in Pope County in the early 1900s!! Does anyone know of the history on this subject??? 1. When was it established, and why was it discontinued? 2. Was it the 'Illinois Central' line? 3. Where is the closest airport or rail station today? Thanks for your help. -- carol === -- -:¦:- from*Carol* -:¦:- on the beautiful NW California-Pacific Coast -----> seeking families in USA and Germany: ¸..... ______________ ·´º o`·, /__/ _/\_ ____/\ ```)¨(´´´ | | | | | | | || |l±±±±| ¸,.-·°´ ¸,.-·~·~·-.,¸ `°·-. :º° ·~·~·-..,¸ W A L T E R - S I S T L E R - C O R E L L - H U E L S M E I E R - R A U C H - R O D E W A L D - B A C H

    3. Carol - My grandfather was an engineer with the Illinois Central so I have a keen interest in your questions. I checked my copy of "The History of the Illinois Central Railroad", but couldn't find any direct references to Golconda. On the web, I found this resource that indicates an extension of the Illinois Central was built from Grantsburg to Golconda in 1899. See page 41 of the pdf file. http://www.newberry.org/collections/Illinois_Central_Guide.pdf The Illinois Central tracks are also shown on the 1921 topographic map of the Golconda Quadrangle which can be found here: http://images.library.uiuc.edu:8081/cgi-bin/viewer.exe?CISOROOT=/maps&CISOPTR=503 So, it appears Golconda did get rail service sometime between 1899 and 1921. Sorry, I don't know the answers to your other questions.
