Thanks Linda, it worked and that answered my question. My father's family, SC Camden, lived in Union Precinct, Pope County for a few generations, I visited there frequently during my childhood. Indeed it borders Saline and Johnson Counties. The mail was addressed to Stonefort which is in Saline County, it is so rural there that there isn't really a town that I know of in that precinct. I also found the family listed in the 1910 and 1920 cenuses in Union Precinct. I had found a map online at one time which had Union precinct in it. Good morning all, I have been reading with interest and awe the amount of knowledge that you all have about Pope County and its history of towns and people. I am looking for any and all Eskew's in this area. My grandparents lived in Eddyville an they are buried in the 'Old Home Cemetery. They are John Eskew and Mary Lillie Lauderdale. Does anyone have a listing of the burials in the Old Home Cemetery? I am looking for my g-grandparents and their resting place. Thank you in advance for any assistance. In the 1880 Census, Enumerated by *James B. FLOYD, June 1880, UNION (Colorado) is listed as a "Precinct", as were the others. It rests on the Saline County and Johnson County lines. Next to Polk Precinct (Oak) and also borders Eddyville Precinct (Eddyville) and Alexander Precinct (Glendale). Towns listed in above parenthesis were post offices in 1880. *James B. FLOYD did both the Union and Polk Precincts, and appears to have confused them and interchanged them at times. *About 1 1/2 pages in Union Precinct (Probably Polk Precinct) are very dim and so faint as to be illegible. --- The only UNION I could find in "Ghost Towns of Southern Illinois" were as follows: UNIONVILLE in Massac County, first known as Union Village - intersection of Fort Massac-Padukah and the Padukah-Equality Roads. Last business closed in 1938 - after declining into a small country hamlet. UNION in Randolph County , a post office near Union School east of Camptown (east part of Chester). Opened 1844, closed 1851. UNION P.Ofc., aka PRESTON, in Union County - a MIssissippi River town short distance down stream from the Big Muddy River. Grew rapidly during Civil War, and a shipping point for livestock, grain and lumber. Post Office opened in 1843, closed in 1855, reopened in 1856 and closed 1885. The townsite is now in the river bed. Did not get into more details, but all above are now considered ghost towns. Found nothing in Pope County. I did not find any reference to Union as a City/Town/Village in John Allen's "Pope County Notes" I think that the Union you are looking for is the township in the Northwest corner of Pope County. Hello I believe I have found past relatives living in Union in Pope county Illinois. I found information on them in the 1880 census for Pope County. If anyone has this census then please contact me with information on the Owen family's. Is Union a town that was there then but long gone or is it still around or was it a Township? Where is or was it located? Thanks for any help!
Patricia, Thank you for looking up that infomation! All of it was related to my family line. I had the information for Lydia (my husband's gg gma). I knew Lydia had an older sister named Catherine but I didn't have her info. According to my husband's gma, Phillip's name was pronouced as Woost. No wonder that it was spelled different. Terry, I found in the New Hope Church Cemetery: Aaron and Rosella Walker The cemetery is located at Twp 11, South Range 7 East Section 19. When you get to Golconda, go to the courthouse and get a range map. They are very helpful at the courthouse. Daniel J Walker b. Nov. 10, 1805 d. Aug. 25, 1872 buried in New Liberty Church Cemetery Twp 12 South Range 6 East Section 19. Did not find an Elizabeth Walker. I will keep looking for the Shufflebargers; they are listed as Shufflebarger, S. Barger, etc...every imaginable spelling. My parents and I were in Pope County in October 2004, and found that it was actually pretty easy to find the cemeteries that we wanted to visit...plenty of info at the courthouse and at the library and the people were extra helpful. Hello, My mother would like to visit the graves of her grandparents and great-grandparents this summer. The names are Aaron [1867-1956] and Rose Ella (Shufflebarger) [1869-1943] WALKER, James [1832-1897] and Indiana (King) [1837-1880] SHUFFLEBARGER, Daniel J [?-?]and Elizabeth (Whiteside) [1846-?] WALKER. They are possibly buried in New Home or New Hope Cemetery. Can anyone help us figure out where to go? Thanks. Terry Dowden
Anybody seen a burial for a James Hall born 1812 died 1880-1900 or Matilda (secrist) Hall Born 1815 died before 1880-1900. I know they had relatives buried in IOOF cemetery. Thanks Rodnye Hall Subknave@cox.net
Doug, In the town of Golconda IOOF Cemetery I found Leverett, infant son of H and Nadine Leverett b & d Jan 26 1924. None in the City Cemetery. I found one in the Eddyville Cemetery = Denver W. Leverett b June 19, 1903 d Jan 20, 1918. Are those any help? I had several Leverett ancesters married there in Golconda but I can't find their parents, Martin and Elizabeth (Cockran) Leverett. Martin died in 1865 and Elizabeth in 1871. Any help appreciated. Sandra, The work was, last I heard, being done by volunteers of the Genealogical and Historical Society. I haven't seen any mention of it in the bulletins they send out, so I imagine it is going really slow. When I was there several years ago I went to a meeting and they were just compiling lists and trying to locate them on maps and hadn't actually done any yet. Sorry, I don't know any more than that, maybe someone else on the list does? Taffy, In the marriage book for Nancy Jane Ingrams, she is the mother and Philip Weest (yes, there are two e's in the last name) is the father of Catherine Weest age 17 who is marrying Daniel Davis age 17. Date of the marriage was 20 Mar 1881. It lists the marriage at the residence of Philip West (with 1 e) with Samuel West and Horace Davis as witnesses. I looked in the older records and didn't see Nanacy Jane and Philip getting married though. I do see the family on the 1880 census: Grand Pier Twp 264/266 WEST, Phillip 47 Married Farmer Prussia Prussia Prussia Nancy 34 wife Keeping house IL Prusia Prusia Samuel 19 IL Prusia IL cannot write Catherine 17 IL Prusia IL cannot write Lida 15 IL Prusia IL cannot write Jane 14 IL Prusia IL cannot write Mary 10 IL Prusia IL cannot write Christina 8 IL Prusia IL The other one lists Nancy Ingaham as mother and Philip West as father of Lydia Ann Davis (West) age 27 of Herod Springs marrying William H. Thomas age 38 on 11 June 1891, marriage taking place at the home of the bride. John Herod and Dan Herod as witnesses. I looked back but I didn't find Lydia (or Lida) marrying the first time. Does any of that help? Does anyone have any information on A. Alt Photograph Gallery that was in Golconda? Time frame, etc Janice Bradford Threw jthrew@verizon.net
I was wondering if there were any LEVERETT's buried in the Golconda cemeteries? I had several Leverett ancesters married there in Golconda but I can't find their parents, Martin and Elizabeth (Cockran) Leverett. Martin died in 1865 and Elizabeth in 1871. Any help appreciated. Doug
Thank you, Paticia. I did not know the whole county had not been done yet. Do you know when it might be finished so I can check back again later? Thank you for checking on the marriages, but I do have info on Elnora "Nora" Smith and John W. Ingram. They were married in Hardin County, IL on 20 July 1890 but do not have marriage info on W.F. "Frank" (Franklin) Ingram and Martha Higgins. Again, thank you for your time and efforts. You are helping so many with your searches. Sandra
