Carol - My grandfather was an engineer with the Illinois Central so I have a keen interest in your questions. I checked my copy of "The History of the Illinois Central Railroad", but couldn't find any direct references to Golconda. On the web, I found this resource that indicates an extension of the Illinois Central was built from Grantsburg to Golconda in 1899. See page 41 of the pdf file. http://www.newberry.org/collections/Illinois_Central_Guide.pdf The Illinois Central tracks are also shown on the 1921 topographic map of the Golconda Quadrangle which can be found here: http://images.library.uiuc.edu:8081/cgi-bin/viewer.exe?CISOROOT=/maps&CISOPTR=503 So, it appears Golconda did get rail service sometime between 1899 and 1921. Sorry, I don't know the answers to your other questions. This is sort of an aside to the question about Nathan Joiner. I have a mystery Joiner named JONATHAN, and perhaps NATHAN was a descendent of his. Jonathan Joiner married Polly Whittaker Dees, who might be my ggg grandmother, and who appears to have married someone named Dees before she married Jonathan. I've been looking for the parents of my gg grandmother, Judie Dees, who married Robert Waggoner/Wagoner in Pope County in Oct. 1846. There were no Dees in Pope County after the early 1820s, so I suspect Judie and her brother, Lewis Nelson Dees, were raised in a household headed by someone who was no a Dees. My best candidate to be the mother of Judie and Nelson is a woman listed as Polly Whittaker aka Dees who married a Jonathan Joiner in Pope County in 1827. My guess is that Polly, who appears to have been the daughter of Mark Whittaker, was first married to a Dees and then to Jonathan Joiner. JOINER, JONATHAN WHITAKER, POLLY (MISS) POPE 02/18/1827 00A/0038 00000000 However, Jonathan Joiner was not listed as such in the censuses following 1826, so I haven't been able to figure out where Polly and Jonathan went (possibly with Polly's children) after 1826! Among references I found (in a typed book at the Pope Cunty courthouse) regarding Mark Whitaker's probate records, I found the following entries: - 26 Jan 1826 Polly Dees became indebted to John Baldwin and Jinta Whitaker, administrators of Mark Whitaker's estate, for a list of goods (furniture, livestock, etc.) which is footnoted in the record as probably a wedding gift. However, Polly wasn't married until 1927, so my guess is that it might have all been a gift made to help her establish a household on her own following the death of her husband or folowing a divorce (divorce is probably a better guess, since she apparently went back to using her maiden name by the time of her marriage in 1827). - on 20 May 1828, there is a letter in regard to estate notes indicating that Polly Joiner, wife of Jonathan Joiner, is an heir to the estate of Mark Whitaker - on 10 August 1829, there is a record that Polly Joiner, alias Dees, was an hier to Mark Whitaker. ----- Original Message ----- From: "CSWR" <cswr@earthlink.net> To: <ILPOPE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 28, 2005 10:12 PM Subject: Re: [ILPOPE-L] NATHAN JOYNER tombstone I am *starved* for family pictures of my paternal WALTER family for decades!! Dear Lee & Ae, The pictures look great, but I haven't been able to print them out. It's as if the photos are much wider than will print - just a portion of each picture prints out. Thanks for your email message. Joyce & group are in a cruise ship. She called me yesterday and said she had a voice mail on her cell phone from Amy. (Juanita had hip replacement surgery.) Amy was crying. Joyce tried to call Lloyd, but no answer. She called me. I got on the computer and typed in Lawton, OK Southwesten Hospital. When I called that number it gave, they said they didn't have Juanita, but gave me the number of the Comanche County Hosp. Juanita is there. The problem was that she was not yet awake and surgery was 48 hours ago. So I talked to Lloyd. Actually it seems that Juanita would "come & go" and could talk & everything 'tho she was "asleep." Someone scratched the bottom of Juanita's foot & she said, Amy, stop hurting me! They offered her water. She drank & then said, "I don't want any more." I caleld Joyce back & she said when a person has had anethesia That is not uncommon for them to act like that. My Cowserts came from this area (Pendleton/Chester) of South Carolina also. They left this area after the death of the patriarch in 1797 and established themselves in Livingston County, Kentucky. By about 1815, all but one of the family had moved on to Pope County (the part that later became Hardin County). I have other who came from VA, but I don't have any others but Pope Co. King, Anderson, Shufflebarger. I think some of the Shufflebargers stopped in IN. Sharon
Frederick A. Benard and his wife, Dorthea Helm were married in Frederick Co VA, had their children in VA before moving on to Clark Co IN where their daughter Margaret married John T. Scott in 1821. By 1825 they were in Pope Co IL. And then there is Frederick Doctorman from PA, migrating into Gallia Co OH, down the Ohio River into Livingston Co KY, died in Pope Co in 1845. His son, Adam married Malinda Jackson daughter of George Jackson from NC & Susanna Vinyard born in GA. Jacob Foreman came into Livingston Co KY from Edgecombe Co NC; his forefathers were from Surry Co VA, his second wife was Isabelle Glass, came to Livingston Co KY with her parents James & Hannah Elizabeth Barnhill Glass and siblings from York District SC. Their son William Percy Foreman moved across the Ohio River into Pope Co IL. William married Margaret Minerva Hanna in Pope Co IL in 1836. John Hanna was born in Lancaster Co PA, migrated to Guilford Co NC, where he married Margaret Hamilton daughter of George & Frances Brown Hamilton. They migrated into eastern TN, on to Davidson Co before settling in Wilson Co TN about 1796. They finally ended up in Pope Co about 1820. The Davidson family came into Pope Co IL from Stewart Co TN before 1850. My gg grandparents, Oliver Perry & Leatha Whitley Davidson were married in Pope Co in 1848. This family is one of my brick walls. John & Sarah Wilkerson Chaudoin [Shadowin] migrated from Chesterfield Co VA in Green Co KY where their daughter married Joseph Jennings in 1814. They moved on to Allen/Simpson CO KY before coming into the southern IL area and Pope County. Robert Soward was born in Greenbriar Co VA in 1783 and married Orpha Hurford in Pope Co IL in 1824. Revolutionary War veteran Jesse Reams and his four sons immigrated from South Carolina to Dover, Tennessee [Stewart County] where Jesse died in 1835. Then three of his sons came to Pope County, Illinois in the 1830's, and one, Woody, remained in Tennessee. Bear in mind that Stewart County which is on the Kentucky line is only a down-river float on the Cumberland across the narrow neck of western Kentucky to the Ohio River and Pope County, Illinois. The Pope County sons were Jesse [1807-1856], John [1810-1904], and the Rev. William Reams [1819-1893]. John married Margaret Tomlinson in Pope Co in 1857. My Rumsey family [they are the NEW comers] came into Pope County later then my other families. Richard & Nancy Echols Rumsey were married in Forsyth Co GA, most of the children were born in Floyd Co GA, but the ninth child, Jason was supposed to have been born on a riverboat on the Ohio River going to Washington Co IN where three of the younger children were born. Seth the youngest child is the only one born in Pope Co and that was Nov 1872. (Lela Rumsey Watson told me the family defected to the North during the Civil War because John Camel [the oldest son was drafted and the family didn't believe in the cause]. They went up into IN & Pope Co IL where Nancy had family members.) Richard, Nancy and some of the family migrated to Conejos Co CO where Richard died in 1895. Nancy & Seth returned to Pope Co after his death. Talk about wanderlust!! I have very little on my Joseph Lacy & Amy Siddell Lewis line; they were married in VA in 1795. Some of the census records state the children were born in VA, TN & SC, so I really don’t know what route they took, but Joseph died in Pope Co in 1823. James Yancey Trovillion was the son of Edward & Susannah Carr Trovillion of Albemarle Co VA. The family migrated to Wilson Co TN where James married Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Maddox, daughter of Elijah & Betsey Ann Brown Maddox in 1823. The family moved from Wilson Co TN to Franklin Co IL about 1831, following Betsy's brother, James Maddox. While there James Yancey volunteered for the Blackhawk War, he served from June 1832 to Aug of the same year. After that the family returned to TN and James Yancey again volunteered, this time for the Seminole War in Florida. He served from July 1836 to Jan 1837. After his return he again moved his family to southern Illinois, this time to Pope County. This is some of the information I have gathered on my Pope County ancestors. Judy Judy Foreman Lee _UdyDee43@aol.com_ (mailto:UdyDee43@aol.com) My families: Benard, Brown, Crawford, Davidson, Doctorman, Echols, Foreman, Glass, Hanna, Holmes, Hurford, Jackson, Jennings, Lewis, Maddox, Reams, Rumsey, Scott, Shadowen, Sipe, Slankard, Soward, Trovillion, Tomlinson/Linson, Vinyard, Whitley, Williams, etc.
The Camden family's origins are still a bit theoretical, I am about 90% sure of the origin but so far have not found a bible record, will, or another concrete source of the parentage of my gggrandfather Marbel McPatrick Peter Camden. If my theory is correct, they originated in the Maryland Colony in 1669, that information is documented. Then they migrated to Nelson County, Virginia, which later became Amherst County which is where I believe Marbel was born. Then the family moved to Rockbridge County, Virginia. According to family folklore, Marbel went to another state further south to work as an overseer on a plantation, then we went to Franklin County, Tennessee and was married while in a wagon train to Sarah(Sallie) Hopkins in 1827. Their children were born in Tennessee. Before migrating to Johnson County,Illinois around 1850, they lived in Davidson County, Tennessee. The next generation lived in Williamson County, Illinois. Then my grandfather Shelton Columbus Camden lived in Pope County, Illinois. My Uncle Loren Camden lived in Pope County until in his old age, he was being cared for in Williamson County, he passed away in 1991. My Dad, Aubrey Camden, grew up in Pope County and moved to nothern Illinois in Whiteside County to find work. My other lines mostly lived in neighboring counties in Southern,Illinios. My Joneses lived in Jackson County, Tennessee before moving to White County, Illinois, then on to Williamson and Johnson Counties in Illinois. My Gurley line, which I have just begun to reaserch, was in Johnson County. I believe they originated in North Carolina. The Barbers and Gibbs which are also new to me lived in Southern Illinois as well. My Shelton line lived in Todd County, Kentucky before moving to Illinois. Several generations of Sheltons lived in Pittsylvania County, Virginia and before that Middlesex County, several generations going back to the 3rd charter of Jamestown in the 1600's. This line of Sheltons came from Southgate, Kent, England and were lords and knights going back to the 1100's. I don't have all the documentation done myself, I am still trying to get past all the documentation I need to do in southern Illinois!!! My Hopkins line is my brick wall. I think a UFO droped her off in North Carolina without her parents, they were left in outer space somewhere. The aliens just happened to drop her off in a wagon train headed fro Tennessee, Marbel met her and married her. There was a Hopkins in the 1830 Franklin County census who was listed near where my Camdens were listed, so it is possible that her family may have been migrating to Tennessee as well. I have also seen a few Hopkins listed in southern Illinois too ro they may have stayed in North Carolina. According to the 1860 Johnson County, Illinois census, Sallie Hopkins Camden was born in North Carolina.
