    3. I forgot to mention, I know I have "Joiner" relations in Dexter Mo. who are my fathers cousins. But, I don't know just yet how to tie them in. I was a child during the visiting and only know they were cousins. Since my family came from Pope Co. and Hardin Co. Illinois, I am sure there is some connection to the Joiners in Pope Co. I have been concentrating more on a couple of direct lines and haven't had time to pursue this family. If you learn of Joiners and Ledbetters together will you please forward to me. Thank YOu -----Original Message----- From: Laura1853 <Laura1853@aol.com> To: ilpope-l@rootsweb.com <ilpope-l@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, April 05, 1998 10:19 PM Subject: [ILPOPE-L] Joyner/Joiner surname :Any information on the Joyner/ Joiner surname in the Illinois area. : :

    3. I too have been looking for Joiners, Here is what I have on the Joiners of Southern Illinois in my data file Although some of the Joiners married into the Ledbetter family, I am trying to put this together. I have no connection at this time in my data file, although yesterday, I was reading documents and found one or more Ledbetter and Joiner couples together. As I am just getting started on this article, and was only highlighting my interest, I did not take notes. When I get back to the article, I will make notes as to relationships. 3. Laura, There was a Gordon Joyner that lived around Stonefort, Illinois, which would be either Williamson or Saline County, depending which side of Stonefort he lived on, but you may try those counties. I don't know if this name if of any interest. I only knew of him through my parents. I think, he was a singer in So. IL. I know no other details about him. Linda Holmes WHite

I think her mother may have been Nancy, who as of the 1880 census was remarried to John HOGG in Hardin county. This is based on a census entry where the name and age fits but I haven't had a chance to explore this theory yet. I have, however, extracted many census entries for JOINER from both Pope and Hardin counties from 1870 through 1920, and including a couple of the state censuses. Out of curiosity I looked through these entries last night and found one from Hardin county in 1910 for a James F. JOINER, age 31, with a [first name illegible] LEDBETTER, male aged 23 listed as "Servant". James' profession was listed as Doctor of Medicine. They could well have been brothers-in-law or cousins. I don't know if this entry "fits" with any of your information, but I found it interesting. As I said, though, I do have a lot of JOINER census entries if there's anyone in particular you're looking for; just let me know. John

Nov 1975) daughter of John W. HENSON (b. 14 Apr 1883, d. 24 Mar 1938) and Lee Alice SHOCKLEY (b. Nov 1884, d. 22 Feb 1979); John was the son of Abraham P. HENSON (b. ?, d. 5 Jun 1887) and Annabelle BARBER (b. ?, d. ?). "My" Hensons were from Hardin county and I haven't uncovered any other information yet about "my" Hensons so I don't know if or where they may fit in. Now in answer to your question, I have extracted many HENSON entries from several censuses for both Pope and Hardin counties. Looking through them I found an entry in Pope County, Jefferson precinct for the 1880 Federal Census for a Thomas HENSON, with wife Melissa, two sons and two daughters (the eldest child being Emma, age 8) and also his father, Thomas. There were also two other people in the household, a Fredonia and Charles ROBINSON (appears to be a mother and son, but no relationship to Thomas HENSON is indicated). I'm not sure if this is the family you referred to, but it seems to fit. If you don't already have this census entry I can mail you a copy -- just let me know. As I said, I have several HENSON census entries on file so I can look for others if needed. John

Deed descriptions and land abstracts identify the easements for the road. County records describe the labor provided by the land owners required to build and maintain the road. They also contain property tax records to show a property tax debtor reduced the property taxes they owed by performing maintenance on the county road. Searches through the Pope County land records and the indexes for any county roads and highways may provide some information and point to later state records as well. Although they may have been drafted too late, the U.S. Geological Survey has microfilm copies in black & white of their obsolete topographic maps. One of the earlier maps from the late 19th century and early 20th century may help. Dallas Patterson nye@fidalgo.net

William agreed to serve faithfully until the age of 21 and not to absent himself from his master. Cotton agreed to provide good comfortable lodging, diet and medical aid and to teach William or to have him taught to read, write and the ground rules of arithmetic and the art of farming. Cotton also agreed to provide William with a new Bible and two new suits of clothes at the expiratiion of his term. Does anyone have any information on this Willliam Morris or Caleb Cotton? Also looking for information on Charles G. Yewell born July 24, 1826 and John Yewell born April 25, 1828, sons of John Yewell who was deceased in 1836. He was looking for information for John James Jacobs, born Sept 30, 1857 in Eddyville, IL and Etha IndaAnn Lauderdale, born March 26, 1858 in Eddyville, IL. I didn't pursue this because I don't believe it is my family. My Greatgrandfather was Wm. Henry Jacobs, married to Pernecia Pugh. My grandfather was James Jacobs, married to Sarah Della Yates. Also found this on the Jacobs school in a publication on the 75 country schools of Pope County: "The Jacobs school was located in the southeastern part of Pope County on the banks of the Ohio River. Not a lot of information is available about this school. It was probably like the other little one room country schools of those days. I.A. Russell of Hamletsburg taught in 1910 for a salary of $45.00 a month. Since Hamletsburg was close to the neighboring school district of Jacobs, it is possible that he lived at home and rode a horse back and forth. Declining enrollment closed the school and sent the children to a school in the area where they lived." Just checked the marriage records for Pope County and found this: John J. Jacobs, Born Pope County, Farmer, 1st marriage, son of Coleman Jacobs and Mary S. Linson, age 23...married Feb 12 1880 to Etha Indiana Lauderdale, born Pope County, first marriage, daughter of Lewis Lauderdale and Mary (Marg??) Williams, age 22. Marriage performed by Simon S.Barger, J.P., witness Hiram Lauderdale. Married at the residence of Newton Lauderdale. Applicant for license was John J. Jacobs. Hope this is of some help. Strange: My greatgrandmother's name was Etha Inda Williams, married to Benjamin F. Yates. Wonder what the inspiration for Etha Inda (Indiana) was? Linda
