    3. Hi everyone, I've had some ISP problems, and rootsweb has some problems so.............. Would everyone check and make sure that any queries, surname submissions, links to the family sites, etc.,etc. are posted on the website. I can't even put a notice on the site right now because I can't upload until later this week, hopefully.*sigh* If I've missed anything please resubmit. I've lost scads of mail into the depth of cyberspace and to add insult to injury the computer then feasted on most of the rest. Sorry for the inconvenience!!!! Ginger gingerh@intrnet.net

    1. [ILPOPE-L] Old Slave House
    2. Jon Musgrave
    3. Hello The Illinois General Assembly adjourned after 1 a.m. Saturday morning having passed a budget that includes funds to purchase the Old Slave House. Thank you to all of you who contacted the governor's office or various state legislators. Both the local state represetative, David Phelps, and the local state senator, Jim Rea, requested the funds as part of their district project list. Although many of you who wrote received form letters as late as Friday stating that the acquisition was not likely, the letters didn't reflect the strong bipartisan effort made in support of the house. On the Republican side, Jack Hill, the former president of Shawnee Community College and a candidate for state representative in the 118th District (where the house is located), lobbied the governor and his staff last Thursday. Gov. Edgar must have thought it was a tag team match that day, because Democratic former U.S. Senator Paul Simon visited him the same day to pitch the effort. I'm sure Simon was also trying to get Edgar to agree to come to work at his new public policy institute in Carbondale. I'm not sure what happens next. Neither do the owners. They didn't know about the appropriation when I called them around 1 p.m. Sunday. With the holiday, it will be Tuesday at the earliest before we can get any new information. I'm in the process of producing a half hour radio documentary on the house - which may have to be changed now to add the latest information. And there's a book about the house coming up sometime, probably next year at the earliest. There's is an extremely strong chance that there will be a new non-profit organization formed to work with the state to acquire and operate the site. If you would like to receive updates on what happens with the site, please email me back and I will add you to the list. I'm sending this message out to the same group I did before. If you forwarded that message to another list or person then, please do so again with this one. 1. [ILPOPE-L] Early Settlers - Davis/Bissell
    2. Thomas W Davis
    3. Hello: The 1807 Indiana Territorial Census, for Randolph County, Illinois Territory, lists only two Davis': James and Richard, and one Bissell: Daniel. My great grandfather, Thomas M. Davis, was born in Illinois in 1799/1800. He named a son James Bissell Davis, leading me to believe Thomas may have been a son of either James or Richard Davis, and that his mother may have been a Bissell. Does anyone have any information relating to the three men, or to any Davis/Bissell family known to have been in Illinois before 1807? Thanks in advance for any related information. Tom Davis

    2. Ginger
    3. Hi all, Catchy title, huh.*grin* I really am soliciting submissions to the Pope County ILGenWeb archives. If you have original, non-copyrighted data like census microfilms, marriage licenses (or the original microfilm and want to transcribe) bible records, old obituaries, biographies, etc. I'd like to see our archives fill up and I need your help to do it. You can get that information to the archives in a variety of ways. You can send it to me if that's the easiest for you, the preferred way is to send it by way of IL-Traces-L@rootsweb.com , which is the mailing list that was established just for archive submissions, or you can go to the archive page and mail it directly to the archive coordinator. Your subject line should include the county, surname and type of info. ie.: xxxcounty; Doe; Bio I've been really tied up for the last few months and have fallen off a little in what new info I could transcribe. I do have an original copy of the 4 county history book on loan and slowly but surely am trying to scan some of the Pope Co bios. Ginger gingerh@intrnet.net

    3. Hello, A number of people have contacted me over the last few months wondering about the status of the Old Slave House, one of only two "reverse" Underground Railroad stations left in the country. Originally known as Hickory Hill plantation, this three-story mansion near Equality, Illinois had been opened 70 years as a museum. The current owner retired in 1996 and closed it. He is interested in selling it to the state, but the state hasn't shown much interest. The first request for state acquisition of the site occurred by the Southern Illinois Historical Society in 1944 when they drew up a list of post-war projects that needed to be completed. The state responded that they didn't have the money. Later responses added that they didn't believe the history or as one state consultant put it, it didn't have the "dignity" to be a state historic site. As I wrote the governor's office last week, "what's dignity have to do with it." Auschwitz and Andersonville don't have dignity. They are monuments to humanity's lack of respect for others' human dignity. For decades local residents talked about how Crenshaw kidnapped free blacks and runaway slaves and sold them into slavery. Missing court records and the lack of names hindered any serious research. That changed when the owner closed the site. With his assistance, myself and two other researchers began uncovering every stone, tracking down every possible lead. While we couldn't prove every story about the house, we can say this. The legends fit the facts. John Crenshaw did kidnapped free blacks and indentured servants. We now have names and we now have dates. For the first time, the state now has the facts and they also have the money, thanks to the good economy. The local state representative, David Phelps, has requested that the state acquire the site in his list of local projects he would like to see funded. It's now up to Gov. Jim Edgar. This is the week the decision will be made. If you support the state acquring the this extremely important site which details slavery in the Land of Lincoln, please contact the governor's office or the office of the Speaker of the House. Their email addresses and telephone numbers are listed below. The package we are requesting for the site is this: A $2 million line item in the Dept. of Natural Resources budget to... ....Expand Saline County Fish and Wildlife Area through the acquisition of lands and structures associated with the historic Gallatin Salines. This would cover not only the Old Slave House and large collection of antiques on display at the house, but also the following: 1) Surrounding lands atop Hickory Hill (the existing lot is just 2.7 acres) 2) Half Moon Lick (where the saltworks were first established), and 3) The old RR right-of-way linking the sites (built by Crenshaw in 1840) Saline Co. F&WA is already a part of the Illinois state park system and has a support staff on the site. The boundaries currently abut on the west the property parcel that includes Half Moon Lick. The RR ROW runs on the north side of that property and the Saline River and passes along the south side of Equality and Hickory Hill (it runs parallel with the entrance road leading up to the Old Slave House). The important email addresses and telephone numbers are as follows: Gov. Jim Edgar Speaker Michael Madigan governor@state.il.us mmadigan@housedem.state.il.us (217) 782-6830 (217) 782-5350 Phelps' email is dphelps@housedem.state.il.us For more information about the Old Slave House check out the Southern Illinois History Page at http://www.midamer.net/users/jonm Thanks for your interest, Jon Musgrave P.S. 1. [ILPOPE-L] Saltworks
    2. Jon Musgrave
    3. Hello William McAvoy came to Equality in 1855. In 1903, as an old man, he told Prof. George W. Smith about some of the history of the town and the saltworks. Smith describes him as a "courteous old gentleman." Does anybody know anything about his descendants. I'm interested if they still have any of the things he collected about the saltworks. McAvoy collected much information as a friend of Mr. Temple who along with Mr. Castle operated the saltworks from the 1850s to 1873. Are there any descendants out there of either of these two men? George W. Smith, worked for Castle and Temple managing the saltworks between 1870 and 1873. His son, whose first name I do not know, served as the Methodist minister in Equality starting around 1912. He had a son Gerald E. Smith who graduated from Equality High School. The third-generation Smith wrote from his home in Homelake, Colorado as late as 1973. I doubt if he is still alive, but does anyone know his children. He had a lot of history about the works. As you can tell, I am looking for any and all types of information about the saltworks. Did you have relatives who worked there? When? Every little piece helps. Thank you. Jon Musgrave jonm@midamer.net Check out Jon's Southern Illinois History Page at http://www.midamer.net/users/jonm

    1. [ILPOPE-L] BARGER
    2. EverettKA
    3. I've just finished fine-tuning my BARGER family information. Much of the information came from an old bible. I can't attest to anything other than what I have learned from death certificates, that's why all the text. The Thelma referred to is my father's cousin, the granddaughter of Cora Marina Barger Warren. I have not been able to prove or disprove a SHUFFLEBARGER connection for William S. Barger. There is a Pope County connection, see birth of John Wesley Barger. BARGER Family 1. William S. BARGER was born in Beardstown, Perry Co., TN 3-Jan-1834. He married twice. He married Martha Jane ATCHISON 17-Jun-1860. Martha was divorced from William Barger 9-Oct-1868. He married Sarah Melvina HAMBRICK 22-Oct-1868. Sarah was born in Chattanooga, TN 14-Feb-1845. Sarah died 12-Jan-1941 in Paducah, McCracken Co., KY, at 95 years of age. Barger bible shows Sarah ABERNATHY married William S. BARGER. Death certificates for James E. Barger and Aaron Steve Barger show their mothers maiden name as Hambrick. Death certificate for John Wesley Barger shows ATHERTON to be his mothers maiden name. Residence of Sarah at the time of her death was 121 So. 12th St., Paducah, KY. William was divorced from Martha Jane Atchison 9-Oct-1868. Barger bible gave Williams mi as S only. Death certificate for Aaron Steve Barger, shows father as William Stone Barger. William S. Barger and Martha Jane Atchison had the following children: 2. i. Mary Ann Barger was born in Paducah, McCracken Co., KY 5-May-1861. Mary Ann died 15-Mar-1899 at 37 years of age. I believe the Barger bible originally belonged to Mary Ann Barger. I found on the Barger Society web page: Mary Barger, Spouse: James GREEN, married 2-Feb-1881, Davidson Co., TN, Source: 1992 IGI. Possible that this is our Mary Ann. 3. ii. Rebecca Susan Barger was born in Benton Co., TN 27-Aug-1863. Rebecca died 1-Oct-1868 in Paducah, McCracken Co., KY, at 5 years of age. William Stone Barger and Sarah Melvina Hambrick had the following children: 4. iii. Cora Marina Barger was born in Metropolis, Massac Co., IL 5-Oct-1869. Cora died 4-Dec-1958 in Gibson Co., TN, at 89 years of age. Her body was interred in Poplar Springs Cemetery, next to Joe Warren. She married twice. She married Joseph WARREN in TN, probably Gibson County, 15-Sep-1890. Joseph was born 10-Aug-1848 in TN. It appears that his first wife was Sallie PIERCE b 2-Dec-1860 - d 19-Sep-1889. Cora Marina Barger married Mr. CHRISTIAN after her children were grown. Nothing is known about Mr. Christian at this point, including his first name. 5. iv. James E. Barger was born in Polk Co., TN 14-Sep-1871. James died 12-May-1925 in Paducah, McCracken Co., KY, at 53 years of age. His body was interred 14-May-1925 in Maplelawn Cemetery, Paducah, KY. He married an unknown person. At the time of his death, James was living at 1232 So. 7th St., Paducah, KY. Informant of his death was Mrs. Elizabeth Barger. Occupation given was machinist. 6. v. John Wesley Barger was born in POPE CO., ILL 16-Aug-1873. John died 5-Apr-1949 in Paducah, McCracken Co., KY, at 75 years of age. His body was interred 7-Qpr-1949 in Oak Grove Cemetery, Paducah, McCracken Co., KY. At the time of his death, John was living at 714 So. 9th St., Paducah, KY. Informant of his death was Mrs. Horace THOMPSON, daughter. Occupation give was retired laborer, ICRR Co. 7. vi. Milo V. Barger was born in Decatur, TN 22-Mar-1875. Milo died 19-Jun-1904 at 29 years of age. Milos birth and death are recorded in the Barger bible. Dates are also referenced by sources who say Milo is buried in Poplar Springs Cemetery, Gibson Co., TN. 8. vii. William C. Barger was born in Carroll Co., TN 16-Aug-1878. Thelma believes she remembers a Coleman Barger. Perhaps Williams middle name was Coleman. 9. viii. Martha Jane Barger was born in Gibson Co., TN 25-Nov-1880. Yes, I think its strange that William and Sarah would have named a child after Williams first wife, whom he divorced. (Because of this situation, I question Martha Janes relationship to the family. Perhaps she was the widow of Milo and stayed on with the Bargers after Milo died.) Thelma believes Martha Jane married a man whose last name was WILKENS. 10. ix. Aaron Steve Barger was born in Gibson Co., TN 22-Jan-1883. Aaron died 22-Jan-1953 in Paducah, McCracken Co., KY, at 70 years of age. His body was interred 24-Jan-1953 in Oak Grove Cemetery, Paducah, KY. He married Katie Unknown. At the time of his death, Steve was living at 12 C Elmwood Court, Paducah, KY. Informant of his death was Katie Barger, wife. Occupation given was retired painter. 11. x. Julie E. Barger was born in Gibson Co., TN 2-Apr-1886. Thelma remembers meeting Julie Barger and believes her husbands name was Tom HOFFMAN. Is it possible that Julie married a Tom HOFLICH and that Mabel Catherine Hoflich, b 5-Jan-1907 at 1024 Ohio St., Paducah, KY and d 9-Jun-1907, was their daughter?
