    1. [ILPOPE-L] Cotton's in Illinois
    2. Marla Webb
    3. Thanks to Ginger and Judy for the information you sent on the Shedville Cemetary. I will check out the books etc. I am searching for information on my ancestor Caleb Cotton who was in Southern Illinois 1820- to about 1840. He was married to Nancy Meredith in North Carolina. Marriage Bond 6 Nov 1801. He died in Illinois before 1845. One family history states that he and Nancy were killed by Delaware Indians. I would like to find where they might be buried. I have found records of Caleb in Pope and Johnson Counties. Some of these records indicate that he helped in the building of roads. He had children, some born in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Illinois. Names of children I know are sons: James, Noah Shelton (born 1811), Gabriel Lovoen (born 1822), Caleb Carrol. Daughters: Sarah, Malinda, Mahala, Elizabeth, Margaret Louisa, Josephine, Peninah S. (born 1827) Malinda may have married a George Dawson and at one time was living in Equality, Gallatin Co. Illinois. (1860) Noah Shelton married Martha Stout in Illinois & had five children. She died and he married second Lucretia Spurgeon (she may have been married previously to a Hill). Some have attributed a George Washington Cotton as being another son of Caleb & Nancy Cotton. However, I have found information that shows he appears rather to have been a son of Elias Cotton and his wife Rachel. I am interested in learning any information on any of these Cottons. I believe that it is possible that Elias Cotton and Caleb may have been of some relation. Caleb was also associated with a Morris family in Illinois, as I have found records indicating he was an executor for Levi Morris and that he, or his son, Caleb indentured an orphan William Morris in 1840. Any help or information regarding these families would be appreciated Thank you Marla

    3. Hi again Marla, I forgot there is some good, well-researched information on Elias Cotton's (and a little on the Hill's) in the book: Early Pioneer Gravestones of Pope County, Illinois by Michael J. McNerney and Herb Meyer The address I have for them is American Resources Group, Ltd. 127 North Washington Street Carbondale, IL 62901 phone # is 618-529-2741 It is a thin book of some 42 pages but packed with information and pictures of some of the stones. This is an excellent book that contains a lot of genealogy information on several families in conjunction with their research into the unique handmade tombstones found on the graves of some of the family members. In case anyone else is interested, the families in the book are: Hazel; Rolston; Hays; Cotton; Hill; Ditterline; Ellis; Cannaday; Sullenger; Watson; Scott; Beanard and (Shuffle)Barger Ginger gingerh@intrnet.net ---------- > From: Marla Webb <dwebb@inquo.net> > To: ILPOPE-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [ILPOPE-L] Shedville Cemetary > Date: Thursday, July 16, 1998 8:03 PM > > Is there any way to get a cemetary list of names of people buried there? 3. Hi, You can go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilpope and click on the books link. It will take you to a page that lists available resource books for Pope County. Ron and Elizabeth Bear spent a lot of time transcribing the Pope Co Cemeteries, their address is listed there. They have published 4 volumes to date. In the small town I grew up in, someone basically indexed all those buried in the cemetary with a list of dates and everything. Do most cemetaries have this sort of registry available? If so I am interested in the Shedville Cemetary in Pope Co. Where there are Cottons and Hills buried. If this is available I would appreciate very much any help on how to obtain this information. 3. Hi Faye, I think I corresonded with you a while back. I just wanted to let you know that I have found my MORRIS in Pope Co. My Alfred MORRIS' father was John MORRIS whose wife was Mary MAHAN. John died in Pope Co in the early 1800's. Alfred ended up in Massac Co. IL. John may have been a brother to Presely & Travis MORRIS; then again, may not! Still don't know John's father, but I'll keep looking. Best of luck. 2. Sharon, I understand how you feel, as I ordered 1860 census book which was only to take approximately 4 wks and took almost 8 wks and 2 ph calls. They have retired people helping with this and I think this is probably why it is taking longer, not to say they can't do this, of which they can and are very nice, but it is not a full time position for them and they like and have other things to do. I would suggest you call them. Linda Holmes White

    3. There are some articles on the different King families, if you could be more specific with dates that might help me narrow it down. Here is the bio on Trail - Sisk found on page 372. James Orvin Trail, son of Matt and Adah (Scott) Trail was born January 13, 1899 in Livingston County, Kentucky. (See Trail - Scott story). He grew up farming with his father, and helping in the general store at Berry's Ferry. In Pope County, Orvin was married February 21, 1919 to Bessie Lee Sisk, born November 16, 1899, daughter of Theodore and Fannie (Throgmorton) Sisk. (See "Sisk - Throgmorton "story). Bessie, a Livingston County native, grew up near Hampton , Joy and Cave Springs. Orvin farmed in Pope County, operated a trucking firm with partner N. R. Scott, and served eight with the State Police, beginning as a member of Illinois' first Motorcycle Police Patrol. He won state awards for firearm marksmanship. During World War II, he was a guard at the Joliet U S Army Arsenal. He also was employed at an Illinois River Shipyard, in the Joliet area, painting camouflage on troop landing crafts (LST's). He was co-owner (with brother, Ollie) and manager of a Conoco station at Springfield. He retired in 1967, after fifteen years employment as Joliet State Prison Guard. Bessie and Orvin were parents of two children: Anita, born December 14,1 919, attended school at Golconda, graduating in 1937. She graduated Draughon's Business College at Paducah in 1939, and held bookkeeping and office work positions during her working career. She was married February 4, 1939, to Noel B Denny, born August 14, 1914, son of Ollie and Alta (Carneal) Denny of Paducah. Noel served during World War II with a Medical Company of the 82nd Airborne Division in the European Theater. Noel drove a delivery truck for fifteen years, and was a Paducah businessman for twenty years. He died July 16, 1971, and is buried in the IOOF Cemetery at Golconda. Anita, retired from twenty years employment as Assistant Payroll Clerk with International Shoe Company, Paducah, continues to live in Paducah. Jimmie S., second child of Orvin and Bessie Trail, was born October 29, 1930 in Golconda. He married Frances, daughter of Cecil and Rossma Broadway. They live at Metropolis, parents of Mark, of Paducah, and Cameron, of Memphis, Tennessee. Mark married Sandra May, they are parents of Chad and Jacqueline. (See "Trail - Broadway" story). Bessie Trail died September 8, 1971, James Orvil Trail died March 4, 1979. Both are buried in the IOOF Cemetery, Golconda. ---- Submitted by Francis Trail S & S Primeau wrote: > If you have a book on Pope County that contains any information on the Sisk > family, Walters/Waters, King I would appreciate knowing if it says anything > on Andrew Jackson Sisk, Mary Wooldridge Sisk, Isaac Newton Sisk, Rebekah > Walters Sisk, or James Walter King or Tom King. 2. S & S Primeau
    3. Is the Genealogical Society of Southern Illinois defunct? I wrote and sent a check for a copy of an old Saga to the college address and have yet to hear from them, quite some time ago, the check was cashed but no copy of information or Saga received? Thank you. Sharon
