Hi Laura, You'll just love Pope County. Evelyn Fulkerson Hogg is the County Clerk, one of best people I know, she's a real jewel. She can help you with just about anything. Shaun Goins is the Circuit Clerk, he's also very helpful. The Court House is closed from noon until 1pm. The library has a new addition they're very proud of, with alot of room for genealogy. The hours are Mon. & Tues 9-5; Wed., Thurs. & Fri. 1-5; Sat. 9-12. Mildred Barger McCormick is the County Historian [as far as I'm concerned]. You can usually reach her at home or the Not-So-New Shop and that's the headquarters for the Historical Soc. You have to eat at the Dairy-Barr at least once, talk to everybody [Wanda will help you] and ask questions; stop at the Golden Circle at least once about 11am Mon-Fri. Our seniors are there for lunch and a little R&R, quilting, playing pool, talking, singing, etc. Talk to Gloria Stacey, Site Manager; Linda Killingsworth and anybody else that will talk and they all do. It's a wonderful group. Go out to Dixon Springs State Park and stop across the road at the Chocolate Factory and visit w/Linda Lewis Meherg, she also knows alot about Pope County, so does Ralph & Mark Aly at the funeral home, one of the old teachers, Bettye Lauderdale [don't tell her I said she was old], R.C. Davidson, just about anyone you meet. Stop by the newspaper office and visit with Virginia. I believe the Mansion is closed now, there's a small motel by the name of Michael's in Golconda, the State Park or San Damiano Retreat Center between Rosiclare & Golconda, 2 1/2 miles south of the Humm Wye on the beautiful Ohio. 618.285.3507. Laura, I know you'll have a wonderful time, don't be shy, ask questions. Good luck and have fun [watch out for snakes!], Judy *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Southeastern Illinois Resource Books [Pope, Massac, Johnson & Hardin] http://www.angelfire.com/il/leefoss Judy Foreman Lee *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ On Thu, 13 Aug 1998, Laura1853@aol.com wrote... >I am going to be visiting the Pope Co. area at the end of this month, for the >first time. Laura >From what I remember the Clerk is very helpful. it has been a few years since I was there. The clerk let me go through the records myself, but they made the copies of documents themselves (when they could) and requested that I put the records back after they were finished. The Library all though small does have some good genealogical items. And don't forget to go the Historical Society. I did not find much there myself (but then again I did not ask). But they still had copies of the latest History books for sale. If you get the chance you might want search some of the other county court houses in surrounding counties, since people moved from place to place. I made the mistake of not finding out what the hours of the courthouse were before we got there. Well it was Sunday when we arrived, I thought for sure someone at the police station could tell me the hours. Imagine my surprise to find out that it was also closed, locked up tight. There is a small hotel in town, I have not stayed there so I know nothing about the place. But if they have the same southern hospitality as most places down there you should not have a problem. I am going to be visiting the Pope Co. area at the end of this month, for the first time. I would appreciate any helpful advice anyone has to give me regarding the area. I am going there to do genealogical research and also trek through some cemeteries. One thing I would like to ask is if anyone knows where I can locate homes that were built in that county by one of my ancestors. What are some good places to see there so I can get an idea of what was there when my ancestors lived there? They lived there from the early 1800's up to about 1956, or so. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Laura1853@aol.com

Dear Friends: My husband and I do workshops in writing family history, autobiography and memoir. My husband, Charley Kempthorne, has written a widely accepted book on writing family history and together we have for seven years published a magazine on the subject. We travel the country and have done dozens of workshops in twenty or more of the States. Often we do the workshops at history museums, libraries, seniors centers, and schools. We are going to be in Illinois the week of November 15 to 21 doing workshops at Rockford and several other Illinois cities. Would your organization have a facility where we might do such a workshop? We would need a room (no special facilities necessary, just a quiet and well-lighted room with tables and/or chair with desk arms so that the participants can write easily) for twenty or more people for up to a full day, though sometimes we do half-day workshops. We are a non-profit organization, The LifeStory Institute, Inc., but we do charge for the workshop and we would expect to pay rent for the room. Would you have a place and an interest in such a workshop? Contract us at our e-mail or if you perfer phone us toll free at 800-685-7330 for more detail. Even if the timing is wrong for you in November, please contact us and we could possibly arrange another time. Thanks! June Kempthorne www.kansas.net/~lifestor/
My grandfather was James Jacobs [1875-1938]. He married Sarah Della Yates on July 9, 1893. At some point in time he left her and their children. We do know he remarried in 1926 to a Frances Galligher in Union County, KY. He divorced her in Oct, 1927. They he may or may not have married Cora Leveritt Jacobs. My problem is: we cannot find a divorce record for Sarah Della and James. Sarah and James lived in the Eddyville/New Liberty area. Cora and James lived in Carrier Mills area. Can anyone help?
Faye, No I have not seen this book, I have a couple Johnson County books but not this one. Thanks so much for your response, I will order it today. Most of my Johnson County searching has been on my descendants of Henry Hart & Nancy Rainey and their daughter Nancy Hart Gossage and some of their descendants who were in Johnson County from Pope Co. at one time or another. Now I am working on the Willis & Isaac McDonald Robertson line that has several marriages into Reynolds families. Dear Judie, Do you have the Johnson County History of Families, printed in 1990? It has almost three full pages with pictures of the Reynolds family in there. The Johnson County Historical and Genealogical Society have them in stock. They are on the web. Faye

Thanks to Ginger and Judy for the information you sent on the Shedville Cemetary. I will check out the books etc. I am searching for information on my ancestor Caleb Cotton who was in Southern Illinois 1820- to about 1840. He was married to Nancy Meredith in North Carolina. Marriage Bond 6 Nov 1801. He died in Illinois before 1845. One family history states that he and Nancy were killed by Delaware Indians. I would like to find where they might be buried. I have found records of Caleb in Pope and Johnson Counties. Some of these records indicate that he helped in the building of roads. He had children, some born in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Illinois. Names of children I know are sons: James, Noah Shelton (born 1811), Gabriel Lovoen (born 1822), Caleb Carrol. Daughters: Sarah, Malinda, Mahala, Elizabeth, Margaret Louisa, Josephine, Peninah S. (born 1827) Malinda may have married a George Dawson and at one time was living in Equality, Gallatin Co. Illinois. (1860) Noah Shelton married Martha Stout in Illinois & had five children. She died and he married second Lucretia Spurgeon (she may have been married previously to a Hill). Some have attributed a George Washington Cotton as being another son of Caleb & Nancy Cotton. However, I have found information that shows he appears rather to have been a son of Elias Cotton and his wife Rachel. I am interested in learning any information on any of these Cottons. I believe that it is possible that Elias Cotton and Caleb may have been of some relation. Caleb was also associated with a Morris family in Illinois, as I have found records indicating he was an executor for Levi Morris and that he, or his son, Caleb indentured an orphan William Morris in 1840. Any help or information regarding these families would be appreciated Thank you Marla
