Sharon Robbs Brown >> Bill Barger >> wjbarger@earathlink.net To the Whitesides researchers: Do any of you have any family traditions/stories about the slaves belonging to the Whitesides, and just how early the family settled in Pope County? Supposedly the freed slaves first settled just east of Lake Glendale and then moved to north of Glendale, possibly around Miller Grove. I'm trying to get names, dates, etc. Jon Musgrave jonm@midamer.net Check out Jon's Southern Illinois History Page at http://users.midamer.net/users/jonm Gallatin County ILGenWeb Page at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilgalla2/index.html

    3. To the persons interested in the King family. I have read that the Pope County Kings were originally French Le Roi, or LeRoy, which supposedly means king in English. This family is supposedly one of the early French Illinoisans who lived in Pope County at the time of the latter Fort Massac at the turn of the 17th Century. Does this ring any bells out there? I'm interested in the 18th Century history of the region. 3. My Pope County surnames are : KEITH and LAWRENCE. Specifically I am trying to find information about George W. KEITH, b. 1811 in Tennessee or Georgia, who migrated with his family to Pope Co. from Alabama in the late 1850's. His son was William W. Keith, b. 1855. George W. Keith was married to Malinda A. (maiden name unknown). William W. Keith was married to Ester J. Lawrence, b. 1857 in Texas. I have no information on who Ester's parents were other than the fact her father was born in Kentucky and her mother in North Carolina. The Keiths lived in Eddyville near Stonefort. There was at the same time a large family of Lawrences living nearby. Ester was probably related to them, but not in the lines of Lawrences in the area indicated in the 1850-70 Censuses. I suspect her family moved there from Texas after the 1870 Census. She married William W. Keith at the age of 18 in 1875. >

My family names are Robbs, King, Waters, Schuchardt. I have lots on the Lands..(back to 1600's). This was given to me by Freda Killingsworth. I know I have a lot of cousins there on the Robbs side, so hopefully some are subscribers to this list. I have the Lands side on an old computer and need to transfer it to this one so I can print it. I'll be glad to share what I have. Lots of Faukersons, Richardsons, on that side. Looking forward to learning a lot. Sharon Robbs Brown

    1. [ILPOPE-L] BAKERs
    2. I've been reading all the "roll call" surnames tonight and didn't see one BAKER, so guess I will have to add my BAKERs to the list. My William & Elizabeth BAKER came from North Carolina and settled in Pope County around 1818. They had at least three children, Lenora, James Calvin and Elbert Caswell. William and his two sons were Baptist preachers, preaching over parts of southern Illinois. William helped establish the First Baptist Church of Metropolis, Massac County, IL, in 1841. James and Elbert married GLASS sisters. William & Elizabeth raised their children in Pope County, and died there, leaving many descendants, and many collateral lines. <A HREF="http://www.angelfire.com/il/bbskaggs/">Bonnie Barton Skaggs, Golconda Herald-Enterprise Abstracts</A>
