    3. Kentucky had a lot of difficulty in providing clear title to the lands. The land had first to be improved before title could be applied for. There was also a lot of mismatched surveys. Some short, some long, some surveys did not abut each other, leaving a pitiful small amount between surveys. A lot of court battles over clear title. Some men also still had bounty land that they had not applied for, although I don't think much of this pertained to Pope County. Illinois fortunately has enjoyed a better land deed opportunity. And of course, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Money, money, money is the usual reason people move. Then and today. Hope this helps, contact me again if you have additional questions on this. 2. My folks left Bledsoe Co., TN because of the war. They didn't like the way things were going politically in Tennessee. He was conscripted into the Confederate army (per some family historians), and escaped, deserted, slipped off, or whatever, went to Kentucky and joined a Union unit, served his year and then went on up to Franklin Co., IL I don't know if this was a common reason for going to a "free state" about that time. 3. In information sent to me earlier this week (well, ok, last week) James W. Robbs was listed as buried at Sulfur Springs. We couldn't find a grave. He very well may be there, but we also located a James W. Robbs with the same date of death of Dec. 19, 1872, buried at Lincoln Cem. in Alexander Co. Ill. The dates of birth are close. I received a 1930 date. The one listed is Nov. 5, 1829. I have James as living at Clear Creek, Alexander, Ill...and also have the birth of two or three children. They were born at Clear Creek. He married Catherine Randolph, dau. of James Randolph and Mary Ann Reevis or Reeves. He may have been married before. ...Anyone know about him?

    3. Hi Sharon, Go to: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilgenweb and click on the link for Illinois in the Civil War, or find the link that takes you to the Sec of State's Civil War site. (Sorry I don't have the URL's handy right now). Hope that helps BTW: If you search at the Sec of State's site be sure you search by town also, not just by county. 1. [ILPOPE-L] Christmas story
    2. "Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even my spouse. The dining room table with clutter was spread With pedigree charts and with letters which said... "Too bad about the data for which you wrote Sank in a storm on an ill fated boat." Stacks of old copies of wills and the such Were proof that my work had become much to much. Our children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugarplums danced in their heads. And I at my table was ready to drop From work on my album with photos to crop. Christmas was here, and of such was my lot That presents and goodies and toys I forgot. Had I not been so busy with grandparent's wills, I'd not have forgotten to shop for such thrills. While others had bought gifts that would bring Christmas cheer; I'd spent time researching those birthdates and years. While I was thus musing about my sad plight, A strange noise on the lawn gave me such a great fright. Away to the window I flew in a flash, Tore open the drapes and I yanked up the sash. When what to my wondering eyes should appear? But an overstuffed sleigh and eight small reindeer. Up to the housetop the reindeer they flew, With a sleigh full of toys, and old Santa Claus too. And then in a twinkle, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of thirty-two hoofs. The TV antenna was no match for their horns, And look at our roof with hoof-prints adorned. As I drew in my head, and bumped it on the sash, Down the cold chimney fell Santa - KER-RASH! "Dear" Santa had come from the roof in a wreck, And tracked soot on the carpet, (I could wring his short neck!) Spotting my face, good old Santa could see I had no Christmas spirit you'd have to agree. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work And filled all the stockings, (I felt like a jerk). Here was Santa, who'd brought us such gladness and joy; When I'd been too busy for even one toy. He spied my research on the table all spread "A genealogist!" He cried! (My face was all red!) "Tonight I've met many like you", Santa grinned. As he pulled from his sack a large book he had penned. I gazed with amazement - the cover it read "Genealogy Lines for Which You Have Plead." "I know what it's like as a genealogy bug," He said as he gave me a a great Santa Hug. "While the elves make the sleighful of toys I now carry, I do some research in the North Pole Library! A special treat I am thus able to bring, To genealogy folks who can't find a thing. Now off you go to your bed for a rest, I'll clean up the house from this genealogy mess." As I climbed up the stairs full of gladness and glee, I looked back at Santa who'd brought much to me. While settling in bed, I heard Santa's clear whistle, To his team which then rose like the down of a thistle And I heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight, "Family History is Fun! Merry Christmas! Goodnight!"

    3. Abraham Womack and his son Allen were from Rowan County, North Carolina, by way of Warren County, Kentucky. The information about the Illinois Womacks you've collected indicates no earlier records than 1818. That is about the time the Abraham Womack clan moved from KY to IL. Is it possible Lucinda is Abraham's daughter--hence a sister to Allen (both of them from Rowan, NC (1799 will of Thomas Womack)? 3. Sharon, Here is an obit I found this week in the Herald-Enterprise dated Thurs. October 25, 1934. Please send Bruce Morse's address. His wife, Lucille is related to my Kerley family. Thanks. Faye "John Harrison Robbs, son James and Katherine Robbs, was born near Sulphur Springs, March 30, 1852, and departed this life October 1, 1934, at the age of 82 years, six months and one day. He was married to Sarah D. King July 18, 1872. To this union were born eleven children: Albert, Effie, Katie, Charles, Ivy, Lois and Floy living. Minnie, Eliza, Otto and one in infancy, preceded him in death. Uncle John, as he was called, was widely known and loved by his many, many friends and will be greatly missed by all. He professed faith in Christ at an early age and joined the church at Sulphur Springs about thirty-eight years ago. He was a faithful soldier of God until He called him home to rest. God giveth and God taketh away, so we feel even though the sting of death is great, we will just be submissive to Him who doeth all things well. Uncle John had been afflicted for over three years, though he only took his bed about a week before his death. Suffering his afflictions patiently, he now leaves to mourn his departure his loving companino, Sarah Robbs, and seven children: Albert, of Robbs, Ill.; Effie Cole, of New Burnside, Ill.; Katie Conley and Charles of Matthews, Mo.; Ivy McDonald, of Paducah, Ky.;Lois Cletcher, of Harrisburg, Ill.; and Floy Talor, of Sikeston, MO.; nineteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren besides a host of other relatives and friends." Hi, I think your Abraham is my ancestor b 1771 in NC d. 1850 in Gallatin Co, IL who married Nancy Ann ? abt 1791 in NC or it could be their son, Abraham b. 1810 in NC d. 1856 in Hardin CO, IL who married "Betsy" Shewmaker. There are several books about their ancestors and I have much info, if you think they are also yours. Do you have descendants names? I have quite a bit, but certainly not all. Please let me know. Maybe we can match up names. Judy Ann Horne wrote: > Searching for Womacks in Illinois--especially Abraham and/or Allen. > They were in the 1818 state census in Pope County.
