1. [ILPOPE-L] Brownfield
2. Bob Erickson
3. There is a small town or community called Brownfield in Pope Co., I am told. Does anyone have any information as to who the town is named after. I am asking for a friend by the name of Brownfield, who traced some of his family to Pope Co. and is interested to see if the town was named after his Brownfield descendant. He would also be interested in any other history of this town. Thank You bob

1. Re: [ILPOPE-L] Vaughn - Leverett - Lauderdale
2. Cindy: I cannot believe I am sitting here reading your e-mail to the Pope County page about Silas Vaughn and Phoebe Ann Leverett. I have been trying to find someone related to them for a long time. I know that Silas and Phoebe moved to West Frankfort, Illinois many years ago, I can remember visiting them there. Several years ago I tried to locate a "Vaughn" through information from the phone company, none was listed in West Frankfort. I had about given up hope of reaching any of Silas's relation. Silas was my step grandfather's brother. My step grandfather was Wesley (Humpy) Vaughn. He married my grandmother, Lou Ona (Henderson) Barton Vaughn. They lived in Metropolis, Illinois (where I was born). As a matter of fact, I have just come into possession of my grandmother's picture album and there are pictures of Silas and family in it. Until reading your e-mail I did not know Silas was born in Stonefort. My father, Clyde Barton was also born there. The Barton's and Vaughn's must have known each other long before moving to Metropolis. How are you related to Silas and where do you live? Can't wait to hear from you!!!!! Check out my web page..... Bonnie Barton Skaggs

2. Kent E. Vaughn
3. Connie ; I think you're absolutely right about who this James VAUGHN was but there are so many piculiarities and similiarities between your GGrandfather and mine while liveng so close to one another at about the same point in time that I believe there probably was a connection someway. Certainly they each had a tremendous respect for someone named George each one having given one of their children that name but then I have found that same situation just about everywhere I've researched the VAUGHN family. In TN. I found a James VAUGHN & a George VAUGHN both in the TN. 44th Inf. Regiment serving together at the same time for the CSA. during the Civil War. When I researched all the VAUGHNs that served with the CSA. durihg that time in the South I had 25 pages of VAUGHNs & another 20 some odd pages of VAUGHANs using the extra "A" whenever thay felt like using it and there were more James & Gorges than I cared to count. 2. Any of you Barger people out there....do you have any info on an Barger who married an Atkin/Akin/Atkinson/Akinson? She was my grandmother Bertha/Berthie A..who came from Rosebud, Il. Her mother was a Barger if I'm reading the death certificate right...hard to make out. Cressie was born 4/17/86. Would have been about the time she was born...she died about 1934/6. She and Cressie later moved from Pope county to Alexander county, McClure, Il. She is buried in Lindsey cemetary. BTW...there are Browns and Jacobs buried near them. The gravesites are as you face the cemetary...on the far right side on a steep hillside. Thought maybe someone would like to know. Bertha does not have a headstone yet..but you can find the Jaco headstone there. The Browns used to live right next door to my Ggrandmother Goodman and her son Cressie Jaco. Thanks for any help..Deane Jaco-Green

2. Still searching for the proverbial Jaco family. Have bits and pieces. Did they not want to be found out about??? LOL Early in the 1800's beginning with John Jaco and Mary Ann Dyer/Morgan..not sure which is her last name for certain, in Tenn. Then Mary Ann and children..bout 11 of them moved to Pope County, Il, well, not all of them but the most of them. She was pg with a neighbors child...a Saylors. She later had him in Pope county. Think John went onto Kentucky, remarried and had more kids. Mary Ann remarried first to Saylors..he came from Tenn..but hadn't divorced his wife..then when he died, married a Roial..or Royal Broadway in Pope County. Also, still looking for Alice Dean Broadway, b. about 1866, don't know where from sure. She is either legally a Broadway..born to a marriage or the illegitamate daughther born to Louisa Elizabeth Jaco and Zachariah Broadway in Pope County. The child listed as living in Z. Broadway's home with her servant mother L E Jaco..was spelled Allice..no middle name listed. I doubt very much is this is the ggrandmother I am looking for..but open to suggestions. My ggrandmother spelled her name Alice Dean...and the dates don't match. I believe she is the daughter of Broadways who came to Pope County from another state..migrating. Any help sure would be appreciated on any of this...so I can begin to connect my past for my future. Thanks to anyone who sees this..Deane Jaco-Green By the way Cheryl, was this Royal the son of Z. Broadway???

3. Kent: I believe the James Vaughn you referred to is my gg grandfather. He was married to Eliza Moyers, May 20,1842 in Pope County,IL They had 5 children: George, Joseph, Henry (my g grandfather), Angeline and Margaret. He then married Elizabeth Catharine PINNELL, Sept.15,1859 in Pope County. They had 3 children: Alfred, Daniel and Spencer. As you say there are so many Vaughns with the same names it is hard to tell who is who. Connie

1. [ILPOPE-L] Re: Waldon research
2. Dear Dee My husband's Waldon line is very elusive. I have only been able to go back to his great grandfather William Mathis Waldon who was born in Missouri in 1843. This man was on the 1850 census of Jasper Co., MO, with his (assumed) parents, James and Joanna Waldon. James listed South Carolina as his birthplace, and Joanna's was Kentucky. That's all I know about them. William ended up in Texas (several different counties). I haven't had any success in tracing James any further, although recently I found a reference to a James Waldon in a record in Laurens Co, SC. Do you have a Waldon line? Carolynn

2. Kent E. Vaughn
3. Billy ; I don't find any reference to any VAUGHN named Frances but I now know that James was listed in the census' of 1860 & 1870. He apparently was George VAUGHN's father since George was listed with James in the same house-hold as a child along with several others. The 1860 census showed a 30 yr old woman in the houes-hold named Betsy but in 1870 a 39yr old woman was listed in the house-hold named Elizabeth C.(no more Betsy) I don't know who George ever married or what happened from there but by 1880 James was no longer listed in Pope County. I don't know about the rest of his children or where they went. He may not have even been the same James VAUGHN I'm looking for as there seems to have been a large number of VAUGHNS with the same given names in the general area & all over IL. at the time. Many of them from TN. just as my GGrandfather was. Hope you locate your Frances. Kent VAUGHN, Riverside,CA.

She was married to George Wilson JACKSON, son of William L. JACKSON odf Pope Co. My GrandFather Thomas Gresham JACKSON was born December 2, 1866 and from family stories, Frances died shortly thereafter. We have never been able to tie her in with any family of VAUGHNs. 1. [ILPOPE-L] Recipe for a Happy New Year
2. Judy Foreman Lee
3. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Recipe for a Happy New Year Take 12 fine, full-grown months; see that these are thoroughly cleansed from all old memories of bitterness, rancor, hate, and jealousy. Cut these months into 30 or 31 equal parts. (This batch will keep for one year. Do not attempt to make more than one batch at a time-many people spoil the entire lot in this way.) Prepare one day at a time as follows: Into each day, put 12 parts of faith, 11 of patience, 10 of courage, nine of work (some people omit this ingredient and spoil the flavor of the rest), eight of hope, seven of fidelity, six of open-mindedness, five of kindness, four of rest (leaving this out is like leaving the oil out of the salad-don't do it), three of prayer, two of meditation, and one of well-selected resolution. If you have no conscientious scruples, add a teaspoonful of good spirits, a dash of fun, a pinch of folly, a sprinkling of play, and a heaping cupful of good humor. Pour love liberally into the whole, and mix with vim. Cook thoroughly in a fervent heat. Garnish with a few smiles and a sprig of joy; then serve with quietness, unselfishness, and cheerfulness-and a Happy New Year is a certainty. -from "Leaves of Gold" *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Southeastern Illinois Resource Books [Pope, Massac, Johnson & Hardin] http://www.angelfire.com/il/leefoss Judy Foreman Lee Document your research & cite your sources. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
