    1. Re: [ILPOPE-L] Hemphill Cem. Mr. SMITH's information - GREENBERRY
    2. dmd
    3. This is a family name. It may have originated with the surnames Green and Berry. If You read early Pope County records, you will find some even more strange than that. At one time, I thought of publishing a book of unusual names, then thought better of it. Some people would take offense where none was intended. This name should help you discover predecessors. Like you way, why would someone name their child Greenberry? Unless it was a family name. 3. I think you're referring to the "other" Grand Pier cemetery. The one Cheryl sent is at the Pope County website, along with a map giving directions from Golconda and a plot map of the cemetery. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilpope follow the cemetery link. If you have some specific individual you want me to check for in the other Grand Pier cemetery send me his/her name along with approximate date and I will check the cemetery books. 2. I'm also curious as to who and why in the world someone would name their baby boy Greenberry! Well, they named my hubbies great grand father Thomas William Appleberry SISTLER. So I guess during that time the berry of one sort or another was a poplar name for a boy. Kay of the PALMER/SISTLER/SCHUCHARDT/MAXWELL/HOLLOWAY and related families

    3. Hi, Cheryl Broadway Cossey, I was drawn to your article re: Grand Pierre Creek Cemetery or other. Could it be the same cemetery where my relatives are buried. You go north on rt. 146 past the Eddyville Black Top to the forks in the highway. There use to be a rock shop there. Bearing left head West out into the country. That is all I remember. There use to be a school there but it burnt years ago. Now there is a little white church called Ole Grandpier and a cemetery in front of it. My family names are: Carr, Floyd and Averill and there are others buried there also. It also has a few Civil War Markers including my G. Great Grandfather's stone, Lt. Col. Thomas Jefferson Carr. 2. Sharon, No, I don't have the book, but I am fairly new to Pope County researching. My grandfather, Clarence Schumacher (b. 1864) used to talk about a school that he and other members of his family attended. I think the name of it was Stoney Point. If I am not mistaken, there might also have been a church by that name. Many of my ancestors are buried nearby. Do you have any information on that school? If so, I would like to have it. Thanks, Jim Doody

There is an unmarked stone to his right. As far as we know there is no book listing of this cemetery. My husband has recently cleared the past fifty or so years of growth and then enumerated the cemetery. There are approximately 300 graves and about 75 have inscriptions. 1. Re: [ILPOPE-L] Hemphill Cem. Mr. SMITH's information
    2. Sharon, I must have missed your e-mail about the cemetery at Homberg a few weeks ago, unless you did not post it to the entire list. I am quite interested in knowing about it, since my g-grandmother was a Pope County CLANAHAN. Is there an inventory of the cemetery available? Other Pope County surnames in my lineage are BOOS, GLASS, HEMPHILL, HENDLEY, and SCHUMACHER. Thanks, Jim Doody, Naperville, IL.
