All the Pope Co. marriages available are on:http://www2.sos.state.il.us/departments/archives/genealogy/marrsrch.html If you can't find the person you want, try spelling it differently or just put the last name in. Regina, Carolyn Cromeenes Foss and I compiled the 4 Pope Co Marriage books [1813-1909] in the 90s in conjunction with the State of Illinois, they used some of the information in our books on their state wide marriage project. The books should be available at most libraries. What did you want to know, maybe I can help? 3. Hello Suzanne, How nice to hear from you. Yes, I believe your line does tie in with Alexander somehow, I just don't know yet. Supposedly, my Alexander Murphy the First (that's what I am calling him because he is the first one I know about) was born in SC in 1775. He was married to a Sarah or Sadie Jenkins. We think they show on the Pendleton County SC census of 1810, but of course, this may not be the right guy!!! The family arrived in Pope County sometime prior to the 1818 census, but I don't know where they were between 1810 and 1818. I noticed that for Phebe Murphy's marriage her mother was listed as Sarah Cowan formerly Murphy. We think that old Alexander died before 1830, so maybe this Sarah Murphy Cowan is Alexander's widow whose maiden name was Jenkins. Let's stay in touch, and maybe we can piece this together. 2. Hello Margaret, I am very interested in the Murphy families of Pope Co., Illinois. I am descended from Mathew Jenkins (born 1796 in TN) who married Sylpha Murphy (born in SC) -- I don't know the marriage date. They arrived in Pope Co., about 1817 and resided near Delwood. I know Sylpha had a sister named Pheobe who married Isaac Newton in 1828. In the Pope Co. marriage book, Mathew Jenkins was listed as her brother-in-law. That is all I know about the Murphys. Does this tie in with Alexander some how? Thanks a lot Suzanne Liva Villa Park, IL

    2. I've been trying to find out information for years on steamship riverboats on the Ohio River around Hardiin, Pope Co's. My 2nd. Great Grandfather - Isaac Hobbs - Born 1801 & Died in Hardin Co. iin 1845 was a Steamship Riverboat Captain. He move to Hardin Co. about 1830, & I'm lost as to the Steaamship he Captained or who he worked for ? Possibly the Telegraph was the boat, I don't know, but it would fit the time period ! Do you have any data on who captained Alcorn, Pryor & Rondeau's steamships ? I'm crossing my fiingers, & Praying that you might be able to at least knock out a few of the Bricks on the wall . Isaac was married to the famous Dr. Anna Hobbs Bixby, & son of Christopher Hobbs - born in 1776 7 died between 1860 - 1870 & buried at Rock Creek in Hardin Co. where Isaac & Anna are buried ! I was also born at Cave-In-Rock, Ill. Thank You in advance ! Freda Hobbs Tofsrud 605 Lillian Lane Raymore, Mo. 64083 "Diehl, Barbi" wrote: > Is anyone familiar with or done research on James ALCORN? 3. Patricia, thanks for the response. I was hoping that Elizabeth was on the 1870 census. Oh where can she be??? All the marriages you found were her children. I'm sure that since her husband died in 1865 or so, she will be living with one of her married children. However, David Leverett and Elmyra Reynolds are the only children I can find and she's not with them. The article I told you about lead me to believe she was living in either Pope, Saline or Johnson counties. between 1865 and 1872 when she died. I was going to try and tract the 3 girls Sarah Jane, Nancy and Mary Ann but I can't seem to find these girls who are now Reynolds as your marriage book shows. Not sure where to go from here. Thanks for your help. Kathy

    3. I would like to welcome those of you new to this site and tell you there are some really great folks who are willing to help just for the asking. I, myself do Volunteer research at Andersonville Civil War Prison in Andersonville Georgia. There are Any research I do is absolutely at NO cost and I am willing to do what I can. There are 3282 prisoners on record from the state of Illinois and more than 1000 who died here, I thought I would send my offer. Here are my sources of research. There are 2 online databases to do lookups.....One by name...one by Company and Regiment. I also have a copy of the Dorence Atwater Death list which has the names and grave numbers of 12960 graves with only 460 marked as " UNKNOWN " This along with a CD I have which contains 34,000 names of the 45,000 who were imprisoned there which helps me find prisoner records because of misspellings of the names or alternate names. I visit the prison site every couple of weeks and have access to the onsite databases as well as the physical files. I would like to let you know of another service I offer which is to take photos of graves for a small fee. Please do not consider this spam as my research offer is FREE for the asking and will be posted on this county site only once. If there is anything I can do in helping your research at Andersonville, please just ask.
