Looking for any information on Jane Wood who married John Jackson in Pope County. The only information I have on John is that he died in 1822 in Pope County. Jane later married Amos Chipps. I believe Jane and John had three children: Harriet, James and George. I have no information on where Jane and John were married or when the children were born. My main interest is in Jane and who her parents, siblings were. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you Suzanne Liva Villa Park, IL

One could assume that EVITTS was her married name, but then I checked all male EVITTS on my database, and have no one married to "Margaret" either. I checked the surname sometimes spelled EVETTS, to no avail. (The family today spells the last name EVITTS, but was often mis-spelled in early records.) I have also checked out John MERROW, and John MERRILL (since another MERRILL is listed in Pope County)- neither of these surname spellings appear in 1845, 1855, 1860, 1865 State and Federal Censuses nor other marriage records. Nothing was found in the Pope County Family History volumes. Also checked (but not throughly) Massac County Research book, and neither EVITTS or MERROW/MERRILL appear. It is very possible that he was from other surrounding counties, or states...and married Margaret there in Pope Co. I would check all EVITT spouses and see if you can find a widow Margaret who had a different maiden name. Perhaps you could do an EVITT "Groom" search at the Illinois Marriage Record online site. The only "M" brides on my database for EVITTS are: Mildred, Martha and Mollie. > > > Or Sibley Jane Evetts who m. Harrison Roe 20 Jul 1865 Pope Co. Would be interested in knowing if our VAUGHNS are related. My husband's line is George Vaughn, came to Pope Co. about 1808- his son, Jackson, his son William Jackson, his son Jacob Green and finally Otis Vaughn (my husband's father) all - except Otis - lived out their lifetimes in Pope Co. Joan Vaughn - Ohio
Joan, My mother's father was Thomas Jackson Vaughn, son of William Jackson Vaughn and Martha Shelby. I have it that William Jackson was the son of (Andrew?) Jackson Vaughn and Nancy Edwards and that Jackson was the son of George Vaughn from NC. I think we are researching the same line. I would be happy to know what information you have and will share what I have. Hello List! While researching my family, I ran across an obscure entry in some 1810 Randolph County, Indiana Territory court records. Before Pope County, Illinois was formed, it fell into Randolph County. Here is the transcription: "Randolph Territorial General Court Record, Indiana 1810-1813", Microfilm #6/0011/11, IRAD at SIU: Tuesday, September 11th 1810 The Recognizance entered into yesterday by William Fisher as security for Mary (or Marg?) Johnson the wife of David Johnson. It is ordered that it be continued until tomorrow morning 10 oclock. That passage happened to be on a page I copied with other information of importance to me. That is why I do not have a copy of the court proceedings from the following day. If anyone is researching this family, I would pursue this document at SIU. Hope this helps someone. I couldn't resist passing the wife's name along. Usually they are so difficult to identify. Karen...I think the required registration of births in Pope County was not until after 1900...I recall that marriages, deaths, births.. ...when started, were encouraged by paying people to register. I recall some of my ancestors telling me that they later became angry when a fee for registration was later required. Also, a few went to other nearby states or counties to avoid the marriage license fees. As late as 1905, no death certificates were used. And there were no birth certificates on my parents and their siblings...1884-1907.
