O.K. Now I am on the right track. I just saw someone asking about the children of "James" and Eleanor Fulkerson Shufflebarger. I see now that was just a boo boo, it is actually Abraham and Eleanor. I am decended from Eleanor's brother Richard. I would really like to have Abraham and Eleanor's children and on down for my records. Chatham Cemetery, we have 2, the other is fairly new, about 40 years old, (I'm showing my age)and is across the road from the first, it is the Chatham Memorial Cemetery. The original 'burial ground' dates back to the 1840's, and by the markers there, the families may have dug the graves where ever they wished as in the very oldest part the graves are not in precise rows. There may have been earlier burials but the village records were lost in the mid 1930's when the village hall burned. The old part is filled up but there are many unmarked graves tho' ownership of the lots are known, just don't know for sure how many of the graves are used. Chatham is about 10 miles South of Sprigfield, Illinois downtown. Our Unit from Chatham was 114th Co. B. J E Southwick

Doesn't the Illinois State Archives have film or something about the Pension apps.? Seems like someone next to me was using something like that one day when I was working there. They have lots of Civil War Records on film that I used when researching Veterans of Rev. War, War of 1812, Mexican War, & any of Illinois Units from Civil War, about 75 men who are buried in our cemetery. Very time consuming but several needed new markers, some were illegible and some were missing entirely. J. E. Southwick
Neva: The only thing I have on Plummer Abbott is the following: 1846: Daniel Hazel was indicted for burglary w/Caleb Slankard, Hite/Hiram Green and Wm. B. Hazel (son of Rebecca), and Wm. B. Hazel (son of Samuel), Samuel C. Hazel and Plumer Abbott. "The Regulators and Flatheads in Southern Illinois" by James A. Rose, says the following about this case: "A man by the name of Henry Sides, with his wife, moved into Pope County and settled some miles northwest of Golconda, freed a number of slaves, bought a farm and worked side by side with them. Soon after this another man named Dobbs came from Tennessee with his slaves and set them free, left enough for their immediate wants and returned to Tennessee where he died, leaving all his estate to his former slaves and making Mr. Sides his executor. The money from the estate, amounting to $2,000 was shipped to Mr. Sides in two boxes, each containing $1,000 in silver half dollars. There being no bank in Golconda, he hauled the money home and put it in the loft in a bag of seed cotton. In July, 1846, a gang headed by Hite Green visited the residence of Mr. Sides, knocked him and his wife on the head, stole the money, set fire to the house and fled. Shortly after they left a heavy rainstorm came up and extinguished the fire. Dr. Wm. Simm was in the neighborhood and in some way was informed of the affair. Visiting the house, he found it splashed with blood and the old people insensible. Though mangled, bleeding and all but dead, they were finally revived and told the story of the outrage. The crime excited the people to something like madness. For days a search was kept up, in and around the house. Only a button and knife were found. Some proved to be friends and neighbors of the victim. Hiram Green, the leader, was the son of an old and respected citizen. The knife had been made by a local blacksmith for one Ned Hazel, who, when arrested proved that he had disposed of the knife to Dan Hazel. Dan Hazel was then arrested and put in jail, but he refused to say anything about the matter. . . . At this time the organization called the Regulators was formed. Their object in the beginning was to . . . see that the laws were executed through the courts. No bonds were to be taken from anyone charged with the crime on the Sides family. . . . It was learned that an effort was to be made to rescue the prisoners on the over-land trip from Golconda to Vienna (change of venue), the county seat of Johnson County. An army of more than a hundred Regulators, on horseback, marched the entire distance surrounding the prisoners who were heavily chained in wagons. The trial resulted in the conviction of six of the prisoners implicated. Four of them died in the penitentiary." Neva, I am not an Abbott, but am related to the Hazel line which is why I have this information. Hope this helps. Thanks to all who responded. I still don't know if James Wesley S.Barger who is buried at New Home Cemetery is the one who married to Mary Melissa Brush. Hi Dan, Its good to know that there may be a pension application somewhere. I had a look at the NARA website: http://www.archives.gov/research_room/genealogy/military/civil_war_records.h tml They give these directions ... To obtain Civil War military service and pension records by mail Paper copies of Civil War military service records can be ordered by mail using an NATF Form 86 for each soldier. Copies of Civil War pension records can be ordered by mail using an NATF Form 85 for each soldier. Thanks for the tip about the JCGHS publication. -Stan
I recently contacted the new owner of the IOOF Cemetery in Golconda. He explained to me that the records kept on burials in this cemetery were poor. I do have a list of who purchased plots, which consist of six grave sites. The new owner is in the process of walking the cemetery and making a list of burials but this will take some time. I have volunteered to type this list for Rootsweb and to send to the Pope County list for our genealogists to use. Thank you to those who responded to my request on who to contact about this cemetery. I appreciate the help! Paula Nelson
Neva, I'd appreciate it if you would let me know if you find out an answer to this. One of my "extended ancestors", Sarah Ellen Abbott, married Logan Randolph. I've been told that she was the daughter of Henderson and Mary Jane Scott Abbott. Yes, there is more information out there and yes, there may be a penion application filed by him or his dependents with the Department of Veteran's Affairs. The Johnson County Geneological and Historical Society published a Civil War Soldiers of John son County in 1999 by Rebel Kreklow, who is the brother brother in law of Gay Mathis, the librarian in Vienna. I copied (for my records) the history of the 120th out of that small book and find it interesting. For my great-grandfather I filed for a copy of the penision applicaiton filed by his widow witht the National Archives, and they said I must apply for the records through the Dept. of Veteran's Affairs. I am still waiting after many months. Dan Downing
I need to pull my paper copies, but I think she is the daughter of Richard Fulkerson and Crissy or Gracy Cowsert. She was the sister of Nancy Fulkerson, who is my direct line. She married John Hamilton. Eleanor went by the name Nelly. Other children were: James Frederick Fulkerson/Priscilla Floyd Eleanor (Nelly) Fulkerson/Abraham S. Barger (not Burges) Thomas Fulkerson/ Mary "Polly" Armstrong Nancy J. Fulkerson/John Hamilton, Jr. Richard Fulkerson/Frances "Franky" Baldwin Susannah Fulkerson/Jordan Story.
You should probably talk to Sharon Brown. She's on the Pope Co. list. If she doesn't respond to this, let me know and I'll email her for you. Judy, no one but you answered me. Thank you for anything you can send. I am a descendant of the Nathaniel E. Randolph family, but like to get the connecting families as well. Hello all, I recently received a "Muster & Descriptive Roll" from IRAD for William C. Sharp (I believe he is the son of the first wife of my ggrandfather (also William C. Sharp!)). He was a private who enlisted in 1862, in Golconda, and died at Lake Providence in 1863. Are there other records, besides the "Muster & Descriptive Roll", that would give me more information? Would his parents have received some kind of death benefit or pension because of his service? Any one have ancestors who served in this company? It seems to consist mostly of Pope County residents.
