Dear List, The book, "Obituaries, Johnson and Pope Counties, Illinois Oct. 2000 - Dec, 2001" is available through the Johnson County Genealogical and Historical Society. Judy, We compiled the Pope Co IL 1845, 1855 & 1865 State Census. I know the Massac Co Gene Soc compiled the 1855 State Census for Massac Co and John V. Murphy compiled the 1855 & 1865 State Census for Saline Co. I don't know if the other surrounding counties have published state census or not. Maybe somebody else knows. Judy Judy Foreman Lee [email protected]
Thank you, Judy. One of my families got "lost" between 1860 and 1870. They had a son born during that time in Illinois, but no one knows where. Without knowing the county, an index is about the only hope. Judy [email protected] wrote:Judy, We compiled the Pope Co IL 1845, 1855 & 1865 State Census. Stan, Your W.C. SHARP was in the 1855 & 1865 PCSC. Bk pg 30 ~ SC1855 pg 24 - SHARP, W.C. total of 7 living in household between WILLIAMS, John C. & SMITH, Jon E. Bk pg 61 ~ SC1865 - Golconda Precinct - SHARP, W.C. total of 11 in family living between KLUGE, G. & HEMPHILL, S.D. Hope this helps, enjoy the holiday wk-end, Judy Judy Foreman Lee [email protected]
Carolyn Cromeenes Foss & I compiled & indexed the 3 state census reports in 1991. The book in the court house was not an index it was the compiled state census for 1845, 1855, & 1865. In the state census they did not list everyone in the household, they listed the head of the household and then marks in age groups for the rest. On Bk pg 37 ~ SC-1855 pg 48 -BOWMAN, Farrose-4 in household, living between CASLLEN, Wm. & GLASS, W.A. I hope this helps and I also hope everyone has a safe holiday wk-end. Thanks Brenda, that "it was very readable" was what I was hoping to hear! Looks like HeritageQuest has a copy that I can borrow. So I'll give that a try. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, August 29, 2002 3:40 AM Subject: Re: [ILPOPE-L] 1865 Illinois State Census > Hi Stan, whenI lived in Dallas Tx, they had the 1865 Illinois state > Census on microfilm and I can not recall if it was all there, but I > believe it was. i am also interested in this census (didn't know there was one) as my ggrandfather has prooved to be most illusive. he and family were in pope co in 1860 census farro bowman julia james t samuel d b 1856 and my ggrandfather edwin edward martha b 1864 so should be there if anyone has avilability to this census i would appreciate knowing if there were still there. farro is sometimes farrow and one census has him as faris. thanks so much. karen in CA
I have viewed some indexes where the transcriber would spell a word or name different than the spelling I read it to be on the actual document. This could be the result of a hard to read microfilm or glare from the reader. Did you them check for different spellings? Cindy L. Hello all, Has anyone examined the 1865 state census for Pope County? I'm wondering if the microfilm is fairly complete and whether it is readable. I looked at an index to the census that was available at the Golconda court house and I found an ancestor listed. When I requested a copy of the record from Illinois State Archives, they replied that the name couldn't be found. Could it be that the index was prepared from a better copy than what is available today? Is the index publication still in print? Thanks for any info, Stan Mitchell
Dear list: I am looking for direct descendants of Sherman and Margaret Snider Emery. Margaret Emery was my mother's aunt. I have inherited a photo and obituary that I would like to return to the family. Susan
Carol, Just a quick note to let you know that I received your message. I am at work and doing this by memory. Elijah is Elijah T Williams s/o Francis Marion Williams and Mary Melissa Finney. Elijah and Rutha had several children only one of which I have been able to document lived to adulthood. This was Creddie Williams who married Carrie Anna Werner. They had 5 children Creddie Jr. who died as an infant and was buried at the German Cemetary (Waltersburg I think) Bertha Marie (my mother) Alice, Alfred Wayland and Raymond Lee. I am working on the parents of Francis Marion and it appears that they are James Williams of MO and Margaret Ann Slaughter. I believe this to be correct but am still documenting. I will try to get more to you this weekend from home. I would appreciate anything that you have on the Werners. Thanks for all of your help. I need any help I can get.....I started researching my granddaughters' father's side, which is the BOWMAN-DOYLE-BATES-ELDER family. Fred Bates was the son of Douglas C. Bates & Alpha J. Volle and his wife Ruth Elder was the daughter of Mack D. Elder and Delsa C. Campbell. Delsa was the daughter of James H. Campbell and his 4th wife, Augusta A. Aly. This is where I really need the help. Who were the parents of James H.? Were they: James Campbell & unknown or James Campbell & Malinda Henley or could it be James Campbell and Malinda Smith, who was married to William Henley first? Is anyone working on this Campbell/Henley family from southern Pope or can anyone please give me some clues. Thanks for anything, Judy Judy Foreman Lee [email protected]
