    1. [ILPOPE-L] RE: Attn Jan
    2. Ok, I now know what was sent to me, that luckily I caught first. It was the Bugbear Virus. The size of the attachment is the exact size listed in a warning from another site. Note: mine said the name of the attachment was 100% doc.scr, but the attachment name could change. The following was posted on another Roots-L site: Listers; There is a very nasty worm out now called Bugbear. BEWARE of LARGE attachments that you receive sometimes coming as replies to fool you. It has already struck about 200,000 computers in 24 hours. It is designed to disable firewalls and create open "backdoors" for future attacks and may not be detected immediately. This E Mail attachment is 50,688 bytes in size ! Symantec has classified it as Category Four out of a possible five. Bugbear is also known by the names of Tanatos and Tanat. Once lodged in a machine it memorizes keystrokes, leading cyber experts to believe the intent is to steal credit card , bank account information or passwords from your computer. Once lodged in a machine, Bugbear searches for e mail addresses and sends itself to every address that it finds. It is much more prolific than the lingering virus Klez .It disguises itself as a reply or forward and targets systems and version of Microsoft Internet Explorer and the e mail program Outlook Express. They recommend you install software to protect your computers. Free virus removal tools are available from: www.symantec.com and www.mcafee.com This is not a hoax as many warnings have been proven to be. Go on the internet to Symantec security hoaxes and check this warning out for yourself before ignoring this warning. Be cautious and scan all E Mail attachments for viruses. Back up computer files on an external storage device. It is a shame such sickies are around.

    3. Sharon - I don't know anything about Norton 2001 - but I have Norton 2002. I was using McAffee - simply because it came with my computer and I had paid to keep it updated - but seemed like it took forever to download updates and never felt like it was working right. Last fall when I got a note reminding me to update - I went to Wal-Mart and bought Norton 2002 - I paid $29.95 for it. I have a years service with it and then have to pay again. I really like this software - between my ISP which also has a virus "catcher" and removes a lot of them before they get to my mailbox - and Norton - it catches them all. "knock on wood". I have my Norton program set to scan all incoming and outgoing e-mails. It also automatically updates everytime it needs to - which kind of ticks me off sometimes, as I often just go on for a minute to send to receive notes and then this little "space ship thingy" comes on the bottom of my desktop which tells me Norton is updating files - so I always stay on until it's done. As for the Klez - I don't know how the darn thing works - I don't believe I've ever had it, but it has stolen my address and sent this virus to people. I find this by receiving "bounced mail" messages. The new BugBear is scary - the notes seem to be genealogy notes which have been "stolen" somehow. It seems these "sicko's" are really targeting genealogy folks. Joan Jaco

    3. Question: It is time for me to either update or renew my virus definitions. My Nortons is a 2001. I can either buy a year's subscription for $19.98 or update the product. What is the best thing to do? I think this would be the last time I could just subscribe to the anti-virus definitions since I've already done it once. 3. Jan, You are right. Most of the new worm-viruses invade the user's address book. Then email is sent out in the name of a person in that address book. The "From" line is relatively meaningless in determining where the virus-infected email came from. Everybody should not only have a anti-virus program running on their computer, but they need to update the virus definitions often, at least weekly, so that your a-v program can catch the new viruses as them come out. And, of course, never open an attachment unless the sender advises there is one. The a-v makers can only do so much ... it's up to us to keep the viruses from spreading.
