I also made my last trip from CA to Pope County in the 80's. I was not the least bit disappointed and gained lots of info that I couldn't get through the mail. Prior to that, the County Clerk was absolutely going beyond the call of duty for me (through the mail) and I obtained copies of all documentation they had in records. Of course, I did years of prepatory work before getting there, so I had many live personal interviews of family cousins that I had never met, and got even more info. One such family was the Maxwells, who at that time were living in Kentucky. It was a terrific visit!! and today I consider it invaluable. I even taped the interviews of many who have since passed away. We spent one or two days at The Mansion, which was then being remodeled and worked on as a Bed and Breakfast. We went down to Massac County, and stayed at a motel there. People were really friendly, hospitable and as helpful as they could be. Most of all, the memories were good enough to carry with me, and I am still grateful for the warmth and endearments we experienced. Yes, the cemeteries are not always in good shape, but then we families out of state and distant from there do very little to support their upkeep. God bless and happy Thanksgiving, CarolSue ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Neva Abbott wrote: >Joannie...... I wish you well in your research. Joannie...... I wish you well in your research. We took a trip to Pope County back in the 80's and found out for ourselves just how primitive some of the documentation is. I hope that things have changed since then. I remember there was a cubby hole where information was stored in "shoe boxes." To my disappointment, the shoebox I needed had been pilfered and all the contents taken. That was true of many of the shoeboxes. Most of the data were in large old ledgers, and the only way to do your research was one page at a time. I don't know if they have computerized anything, so research is difficult. Some of the cemeteries just had "rocks" for headstones, no inscription to give you any clue to who is buried there. I don't want to discourage you for going because I had a wonderful time meeting people and hearing old stories of days gone by. Perhaps you will have more luck than I did. Contact the Pope County Historical Society, perhaps there is someone locally that can give you some instruction on where to look and how to go about your research. They are familiar with their home territory. Good luck!! Wilda Lightfoot is the daughter of Lowell Lightfoot and Wanda Richie/Richey and an only child. Lowell and Wanda were postmaster's at different times over the years in Stonefort, IL. Lowell was the son of Henry Lightfoot and Clyde ?????. Henry may very well have a Pope County connection. I attended High School with Howard Durfee at Carriers Mills, IL many moons ago. To the best of my knowledge Wilda and her children currently reside around Marion, IL. Saline or Williamson County may hold some pertinent records. Researching: LUNN, WETHERINGTON, TUNE, WILLIAMSON, MAXWELL, SISTLER and related families too numerous to list Hi all, Am planning a trip to Pope County to do some heavy-duty research. Could someone tell me if I will be able to access and make copies of documents I find at the courthouse (what types of documents, years covered, etc.) Is there a library which houses documentation. Where else would I find documentation? I have relatives buried at Antioch Cemetery (is this the same as Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery?), Shedville Cemetery, Hodge Cemetery and probably more, but won't know that until I do research - is there a site that lists exact location of cemeteries? Have family members buried in Kane County and Massac County and hope to do research there too. I live in California and am not familiar with geographics of Illinois, so any help and advice as to where and how to start would be greatly appreciated. The information that I have from the lady in CA is that her name was Cynthia Cyrene HAMMACK MANN. At one time she lived in Washington Township. She died 09/24/1876. The lady told me that Cynthia was buried at Old Hebron Cemetery at Temple Hill. The only cemetery I found in Temple Hill was the one at Cole Springs Baptist Church in Temple Hill. The only Hebron I could find nearby is an African American Cemetery, which isn't where Cynthia would be buried. Susan
Do you have specific information available for Cynthia Mann? Clyde Rush At 05:16 PM 11/22/2002 -0600, you wrote: >You're right, it has been pretty quiet around here. You're right, it has been pretty quiet around here. Quiet reminds me of cemeteries...which reminds me...I have a question! I am looking for a cemetery near Temple Hill that has a Cynthia MANN buried there. I am looking for this person for someone in CA. I went down to Temple Hill, but she isn't in the cemetery at the church. We asked a gentleman in town if there were others nearby, and he directed us to a very small cemetery next to an old schoolhouse. She's not there either. Are there other cemeteries fairly near to Temple Hill that I can look at? Or, another theory is that she actually is at the cemetery in town, but her stone was long ago broken. There were several broken stones there. I left a note inside the church for someone to please contact me if there was a cemetery inventory or if anyone knew where Cynthia MANN might be. I haven't heard from anyone yet. So, any help or advice someone can give me? Thanks in advance! Susan Carroll Kelley

Thank you all for your prayers for my sister, Joan. It seems prayer does work and does so well. She has been stabilized and has been put on a different drug which seems to be doing well for her. Once the doctors are able to adjust the dose appropriately she should be released from the hospital. The doctors have told her that if this stabilizes her seizures, there will be no reason why she can't return to work and live a normal life. Last week the news wasn't good and we thought we might lose her. God works in mysterious ways. Praise the Lord. Amen. Sharon

According to his tombstone Thomas was born in 1821 and died 07 Jul 1902 , Cave in Rock, IL. He served in the CW in the 9th IL Infantry. Thomas married twice. His first wife, Polly, died 1850 who gave him three children. The second wife was Mary SIMMONS who produced 5 children. The SMOCKs in Hardin Co., IL in 1840 were Hiram (b. 1800 KY), Barney (b. 1808 IL) and Alfred (b. 1810 IL). They were brothers, sons of C. (Cornelius?) and Sarah SMOCK. Only Hiram would be old enough in 1821 to be a candidate as Thomas' father. The only marriage found for Hiram is in 1837. In the USC 1840 Hiram's mother, Sarah, is in his household as is the oldest male (5-10) who is too young to be Thomas (then 19). The children in Barney's and Alfred's families are all under the age of 10. So there is no trace of Thomas among the SMOCKs in 1840, though he shows up with a family in 1850. Of course, I am looking for the connection which will identify Thomas with his parents.
