    3. One more attempt to determine when a town was named. During my research for a history book of my hometown, there was a person who wrote a book of a certain gold and coal mining area. Almost none of the towns in the area now exist. He learned when the towns existed by looking at the postal records. For a post office to be extablished, there had to be a form filled out which showed a map and location of the town (or place as sometimes a postoffice was nothing but a place in someones farmhouse). There will be records somewhere. I would assume the local postmaster could tell you where to get them. They will probably be in the Nation Archives records. The histroy of towns in Pike County is rather interesting. ----- Original Message ----- From: Melvin McAllister <melmac@cybersurfers.net> To: <ILPIKE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 28, 1999 6:25 PM Subject: Re: [ILPIKE] fcruble > I have a sheet that I copied from the Pittsfield Library that is the cover > sheet for the 1840 Census Index.
