Mar. 21, 1884, p1: "Death of G.W. Underwood - The following taken from a Calif. paper relates to the death of G.W. Underwood, brother of J.L. Underwood of this city. Since our last issue a good man has passed from our midst and sleeps that knows no awakening. Mr. Underwood was born in NY in 1829 and was therefore at the time of his death 54 years of age. He came to Calif. in 1850, crossing the plains in company with John L. Crow, a well known citizen of Plumas county. For years he mined in various parts of the mountains but made his home nearly the whole time in Butte. In 1870 he married Mrs. E. Kister and settled upon the farm some miles below Oroville, where he has lived since that time. Mr. Underwood was an active, energetic man, very positive in his opinions and was a strong Republican in politics. He was a member of the A.O.U.W. and a zealous Good Templar. He was pleasant and genial in his manners, and a good neighbor and an affectionate husband. Among those who knew him best he was sincerely respected and on the day of his funeral a long line of carriages filled with old friends and neighbors followed his remains to their r! esting place.
