On the 28th day of June, 1835, he was married to Sylvinia Sweet, of Berlin, New York, and resided in Berkshire county, Mass., until he removed to Pike county, Illinois, in 1837. He died on the 22d day of Nov., 1901, at the age of 91 years, 10 months and 20 days. The end of this long and happy life marked the repose in which he lived. A hale and hearty manhood has found its repose. Nathaniel Smith lived the rugged life of the rugged pioneer. He settled in our midst at the early day when all was new, and awaited the approach of the civilizing hand. For nearly 67 years he has lived in this county and the greater part of this time he has lived in our town, where he was familiarly greeted by every one as Grandpa or Uncle Than. He was always ready for a joke, but the steady current of his life flowed in the depths ! of noble manhood and the rippling surface was but indicative of the strength and power below. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. H.H. Hurley, assisted by Rev. G.W. Watkins and Rev. W.M. Hailey."
