Feb. 8, 1884: "Nearly 25 years ago Mr. J.J. Sperry left Pike county for the far west in company with Edward Buckley. The two went to Calif. and thereafter a residence of three years they separated, one to go to mining and the other to see the country about him. Mr. Sperry was the one to travel. He visited Idaho, Oregon, Montana and other states and territories and finally landed in British Columbia, where he went to teaming. For 15 years he followed this occupation, and claims to have gone as far north as teams ever went in that country. A few weeks ago he grew tired of his business and decided to return to Illinois, reaching Barry this week. Mr. Sperry finds a few people of his remembrances left but the changes time has wrought are very numerous."
