Here is part of an oral history from Ethel Bobo Conner, a daughter of George and Rachel. There is a lot of detail about life on the farm during this time period, and the end shows the complete list of George and Rachel's children. The log house was built about 1894-in the center of 40 acres -- by my parents, George D. Bobo (born 1860) and Rachel Peacock (born 1866) who were married July 4, 1880, in Louisiana, Missouri. The cleared the land and used the logs to build the house. It was sitting about 2 feet high off the ground on huge flat rocks. They hewed the clap board shingles and the picket fence that is around the yard, chicken yard, and garden to the right. The wire fence was of rocks when I first remembered. We dried apples and peaches on the roof of a mill across the road in front of the house. It took about 2 weeks, then we stored them in flour sacks for winter use. They dig holes in the garden, lined them with straw and buried apples, turnips, and cabbage in each hole for winter use. Also made 30 gallon stone jar of kraut. We ground the wheat for flour, also made corn meal. We grew cane, had a cane mill, and made our own molasses. We had apples pressed for cider and to make our own vinegar. We put wood ashes on a hog shed and let the rain run off them and drain off, to get our lye water, to make le soap out of the lye water and offals at butchering time. We put the onions and potatoes around the flu in the attic to keep them from freezing. We burned wood to cook and heat by. We slept 4 in a bed during winter until we got too big; then slept on the floor -- except Verne who slept on a cot. Guy, Erie, me, and Flo all had the measles at the same time in January 1905 - Verne left mother to take care of us while she went to the town where Oscar worked to take care of him; he had measles, too - I can remember mother had to carry Flo all the time (she was going on 3 years old). There were 9 children: Allie Ollin 1881-1956 Plenny Earl October 1883-November 1883 Verne Bell 1886-1976 Guy Errin 1889-1918 Clyde Nolan 1892 - 1957 Hamer Oren 1894 - 1980 Erie Dale 1897 - 1989 (my great grandmother -- married Harry Sylvester Booth) Ethel Pearl 1899-1987 (date written in afterwards, of course) Florine Ellen 1902- ? I know that Florine died a few years ago, but don't have the date on me right now. Those born in the log house: Erie, Ethel, and Flo Bobo. Ruth Booth - 1916, Donald Selvy - 1934, Rachel Imogene Bobo - 1950-1952 - Hamer's baby girl. Kathleen Ellis
