Mathes was born near Jacksonville, Morgan county, December 18, 1840; departed this life Aug. 27, 1917, aged 76, 8 months and 9 days.He served three years with the 99th Illinois Volunteers during the Civil War. He was a charter member of Major Sam Hayes Post, G.A.R. of Summer Hill. He was the last of the Mathes family of seven children. His parents, two brothers and four sisters preceded him in death. He was always loyal to his country and his friends. With the exception of the three years spent in the Army he had spent the most of his life in Pike county. For the past fifteen years he had made his home with his nephew, Elmer Ator. The funeral was held from the Christian Church Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock and was conducted by Rev. J.D. Dabney of El Dara. The body was laid to rest in the Prairie Mound Cemetery. Services at the grave were in charge of Major Sam Hayes Post.
