Brown was the second in a family of eight children of Willis and Elizabeth (Worley) Brown. She was born in the old Brown home now known as the Dustin Farm, on Feb. 28, 1860 She grew to womanhood and received her education in and near the village of Atlas. She was married to John Huffman Jan. 16, 1889, being united in marriage by Esquire William Green at the Brown home. Two children were born to this union, Myrtle on Jan. 3, 1890 and Virgil on April 28, 1893. Her companion passed away on Jan. 17, 1893, Virgil died in Jan. when nearly five years of age. Maria was converted to the Christian faith, joing the Christian church under the preaching of Rev. J. Richard Campbell in Jan. 1908. She was ever ready to assist the church and the societies belonging to it. Since the marriage of the only daughter Myrtle, to Frederick Jackson nine years ago, she has made her home with them in Pontiac, Mich. Following a brief illness she passed away on Thursday night, April 12, 1929, having reached the age of 69 years, one month and 11 days. She leaves besies the daughter, one brother, Byron Brown, and two sisters, Mrs. Linda Marion and Mrs. Nettie Baker all of Atlas. A host of other relatives and warm friends join in the grief over the loss of one so true and friendly to all.
