Josiah S. Rowand has gone to his reward - he died last Saturday. Josiah S. Rowand died at the home of his son, B.H. Rowand, on last Sat. afternoon, aged 89 years, and was laid to rest on Monday afternoon. Although it was known by many of his friends that his health was feeble and that he was gradually declining, no one thought the end was so near, and therefore the announcement of his death was somewhat of a surprise to many. He leaves only friends in Barry, and everyone who kew him regrets that he has to leave us. His long residence in Barry gave him a wide acquaintance, and all were proud to call him their friend. Deceased was a staunch republican and never hesitated to express his views, but he did it in such a manner that no man who believes in giving every man the right to give voice to his opinions could find any fault with him. He was a patriotic American citizen and a gr! eat admirer of Abraham Lincoln. The remains were laid to rest on Monday afternoon. Services were held at the Baptist church by Rev. H.H. Hurley. As a mark of respect to the deceased every business firm closed its doors during the funeral services. Josiah S. Rowand was born in Haddingfield, New Jersey, April 25, 1813. He was the son of Thomas Rowand and one of nine children. He died January 25, 1902, at his home in Barry, Ill. Deceased came to Illinois in the spring of 1856, where he has, with a short intermission resided ever since. He entered the drug business before he was 19 years old and has been in the same business ever since, making 70 years. He was known all over Illinois as the oldest druggist in the state. He leaves behind to mourn his loss two sons, Bethuel & John R., and 4 grandchildren, Mrs. Marie Nance of San Fran., Helen Rowand of Nice, France, Maggie Rowand of Pasadena, Calif., and Nellie Rowand of San Antonio, Tx, besides a host of other relativ! es & friends.
