Jan. 26, 1916 (in part), Bethuel H. Rowand, son of Josiah and Ellen B. Haines Rowand, was b. in Philadelphia, Penn., Aug. 18, 1844, and died January 21, 1916; aged 71 years, 5 months and 3 days. Mr. Rowand was educated in the public schools and was trained to business life in his father's store, where he acted as clerk from the age of twelve years until October 1, 1897, when he purchased the interest of his father and brother, John R., in the drug business and continued in business until 1911, when he disposed of the business and has since lived a retired life. He rendered valuable service to his country in the dark days of the Civil war, enlisting in the Union army from Pike county on the 27th of May, 1862, to serve for three months. He was mustered into the U.S. service at Camp Butler, Springfield, Ill., June 20, 1862, as a corporal in Co. B of 68th Regt. of Ill. Vols, under command of Capt. Daniel F. Coffey and Colonel Elis ! Sweet. They were moved to Wheeling, West Virginia, and from there to Wash., D.C. In September they were ordered to Camp Butler, to be mustered out, receiving an honorable discharge. Mr. Rowand still felt he owed a duty to his country, and on May 5, 1864, he re-enlisted from Pike county for 100 days, being mustered into U.S. service June 5, as Sgt. of Company F, 137th Ill. Inf., under command of Capt. Robt. B. Robison and Colonel John Wood. Leaving Camp Wood in Quincy they went to Memphis, Tenn, where they were assigned to picket duty. They were mustered out at Springfield September 24, 1864, and Mr. Rowand returned home. On June 11, 1866, he was united in marriage to Miss Charlotte Gray, a native of Pike county. To Mr. and Mrs. Rowand was b. one daughter, May, wife of Captain John T. Nance, of Berkeley, Calif. Mrs. Rowand died July 29, 1901. On September 1, 1902, he was again married to Mrs. Ella H. McClain. Besides his wife he leaves to mourn their loss, one daug! hter, two grandchildren, a stepson, G.M. McClain & many friends.
