Young Pence was in the Marines during the World War and saw active service. After his discharge from the service he entered the Merchant Marine. There are few paticulars, except when he was rowing a shore when the accident that cost him his life happened. Young Pence was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pence of Barry and grew up in that community. He was a graduate of the Barry High School class of 1917. During his service in the Marines he qualified as an expert wireless operator. He was second engineer on an American vessel and had visited in Barry last summer. He is survived by his parents and one brother, Max Pence.
