Jan. 26, 1883: "Died at Hulls, Ill., Jan. 16, 1883, of typhoid fever, Emma, wife of J. B. Cory, aged 31 years. She was for many years a consistent christian, and although but a few years in our midst, yet by her amiable disposition, she secured to herself a host of friends who will hold in grateful remembrance her many christian virtues. Her mother left her home in Ohio and for six weeks watched by her bedside, and as she heard the muffled oars of the boatman as he neared the banks to bear the last of her six children across the river of death, in agony of soul she exclained, "And must it be so? Cannot one be spared?" And the stricken husband, what language can express the agony of his heart as he returns to his once happy home so lately made desolate. May he have wisdom from on high to train up his motherless children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. I.M. Johnson."
