IL, Fri., Aug. 1, 1890: "John McClerey was born in Washington county, West Virginia, May 8, 1831, and died at his home near Hadley Station, Pike county, Illinois, July 22, 1890, aged 59 years, 2 months and 14 days. At the age of five years he came with his parents to this country (county?), and in 1852 was married to Hannah Ellen Farmer. Eight children were the fruit of their marriage, six children, a wife, sisters and one brother remain to mourn their loss. His death was very sudden and a great shock to all. He had been quite ill, but the physician had pronounced him out of danger and he seemed nearly in his usual health, was lively and in good spirits, but a few minutes before his death, had walked about the yards and told his daughter what he would like for supper. When entering the room a few moments later, she found him gasping for breath and almost instantly he was gone. In 1868 he obeyed the call of the gospel and united with the M.E. church at Pleasant Hill, and remained a worthy and ! consistent member until death. He was an industrious, frugal and exemplary citizen, a kind friend and neighbor and a loving and devoted husband and father, and not only will he be missed in the home made vacant by his death, but in the vicinity where he has so long resided. The funeral services were held at the family residence and were conducted by Rev. Calhoun, of Pittsfield, and the remains laid to rest in the Baylis cemetery, and by the large concourse of neighbors and friends that gathered to pay tribute to his memory, showed in what high esteem he was held. The family have the hearfelt sympathy of the entire community."
