Mercer, a well-known and prominent resident of Liberty, died at her home Thursday morning. She suffered a stroke of apoplexy about a week before her death, but she rallied some and on Sunday her family had hopes for her recovery. On Monday night, however, she had another stroke and this resulted in her death on Thursday. Mrs. Mercer was born at Liberty, Ill., and had lived there all her life, being at the time of her death the oldest resident of that community who had been born there. She was born June 26, 1841, and was therefore aged 70 years, 4 months and 6 days. She was the eldest daughter of A.H.D. Buttz. Her aged mother died March 27, 1910, nearly 91 years of age. Mrs. Mercer was a devout member of the Christian church and always took great interest in religious matters. During the Civil war she was a leader in her community in the activities of the women in aiding the soldiers. She is survived by by her husband and three children - one son, L.D. Carns, of Liberty, by her first marriage, and a son, John H. Mercer, of Chicago, and one daughter, Miss Nora B. Mercer, at home. Besides she leaves three grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Mira Wheat, widow of the late Almeron Wheat, of Quincy, and four brothers, Samuel D. Buttz, of Columbus, Ind., A.H.D. Buttz, J.F. Buttz and J.W. Buttz, of Liberty."
