October 11, 1911: "Death of An Old Pioneer. Ex-Senator Kelly Dies Suddenly in Liberty. Maurice Kelly, who was well known in both Pike and Adams counties, died suddenly in Liberty last Thursday morning. He was over 82 years old and quite feeble, but he insisted on making his regular trips to the post office, and while on his trip last Thursday he stopped at Campbell's store to talk with friends and rest. He was sitting on a box in the store when he suddenly dropped over dead. Mr. Kelly was one of the best known men in the state, and thirty and more years ago was prominent in politics. He was elected sherriff of Adams county in 1862, and later represented this district in the state senate for a number of years. He made his home on a farm near Liberty for many years. About nine years ago he and his wife moved to Mt. Sterling, where his wife died about five years ago. Then he returned to Liberty to make his home. He leaves two sons and three daughters. The latter are Mrs. Ed Clark, of Liberty; Mrs. Laura O'Hare, of Burton, and Mrs. Allie Amen, of Columbus. The sons are Tom and Robert, and both reside in the west."
