Funeral services for Bertha Ellen Brown were held in the Bradbury Funeral Home in Perry Thursday afternoon, April 11, at 2 o'clock, conducted by Elder L.L. Curry. Interment was in Swiggett Cemetery at New Salem. Casket bearers were nephews of the deceased. Mrs. Bertha Brown was born in New Salem Township May 22, 1884 and died in St. Mary's hospital in Quincy, April 9, 1944, at the age of 61 years, 10 months,and 18 days. Her illness was of long duration, she having been a patient in Jacksonville, Pittsfield and both Quincy hospitals at different times. On Oct. 30, 1905 she was married to James Brown in Pittsfield. To this union three children were born. One boy and one girl preceded her in death. One daughter, Ruth, (Mrs. Wayne DeJaynes) of Bluffs survives. Also surviving; her husband, James Brown of Perry; five grandchildren; 3 brothers, namely Charles Elmer, Nebraska; Sam DeJaynes, New Salem; Will, Chambersburg; and one sister, Mrs. Winnie Vannatta of Baylis.
