I just found out about this, so I apologize for the late notice. If anyone's in the Chicago area, tune into WLS/Channel 7 on Sunday evening for a story about Free Frank McWorter. Janet Davies interviewed a lot of folks at Barry's Apple Festival a year ago, and this must be the story she put together. - Tonia Ex-slave founded multiracial town By Maureen Ryan Tribune television critic Published October 22, 2006 "Free Frank" McWorter did something unique in American history, and now the former slave is starting to get the recognition he deserves. In 1836, McWorter became the first African-American to legally incorporate a town in the United States. New Philadelphia, in Illinois' Pike County, was a multiracial community to which McWorter brought not just settlers of all colors, but his own family members -- whose freedom he purchased over a 40-year period. McWorter's historic feat and his impressive tale -- which is finally gaining recognition from historians and archeologists -- gets an in-depth look at 10:35 p.m. Sunday on WLS-Ch. 7 in "Rediscovering a Black Pioneer's Dream," which is hosted by WLS' Janet Davies and Hosea Sanders. It's stunning to learn, for instance, that the price he paid for his family's freedom totaled well over $300,000 in today's money. ________________________________________________________________________ Check out the new AOL.
